Volleyball’s Clemente named an All-American

12-4-07

Lewis-Clark State College sophomore outside hitter Anile Clemente was named a third team NAIA All-American on Monday.

Clemente, who is from Sao Paolo, Brazil, led the Warriors in kills this season with 352, while maintaining the team’s third best hitting percentage at .293. The 5-foot-11 powerful hitter was also fifth on the team in digs with 136 and fourth in blocks with 49. Last month she was chosen as co-Player of the Year in the Frontier Conference along with Westminster senior outside hitter Angie Johnson, who was chosen as Region I’s Player of the Year.

Clemente and Johnson, who was selected as a second team All-American, stand as the only Frontier Conference players to be named to an NAIA All-American team.

Clemente is the first member of the LCSC volleyball program to earn an All-American designation since Angela Igoe was named a first team All-American in 2001.

“We’re very proud of Anile”, commented assistant coach Burdette Greeny. “We feel very fortunate to have her as a part of our program.”

Despite being picked to finish 6th in the Frontier Conference, the Warriors finished with a conference record of 12-2, won the regular season conference title, the conference tournament title, and went on to claim the Region I Championship for the first time since 1999. The Lewis-Clark State College volleyball team’s accomplishments in 2007 were nothing short of remarkable, and Clemente was a major reason for the team’s success.
