Kootenai High’s Nyrop signs
with LCSC volleyball team
4-16-08
Hannah Nyrop, a 5-foot-11
outside hitter from
Harrison, Idaho, has signed
a letter of intent to play
volleyball at Lewis-Clark
State College, the Warrior
coaching staff announced
Wednesday.
Nyrop is an all-around
athlete at Kootenai High
School. She lettered four
years in volleyball and
basketball, and also has
lettered three times in
track and once in cross
country. She was a four-time
North Star League MVP in
volleyball, and a three-time
Spokesman-Review All-North
Idaho First Team selection.
She was selected the North
Idaho volleyball Player of
the Year twice and was a
two-time first-team
all-state volleyball
selection.
In basketball, she was
chosen to all-league team
three times, including being
named the MVP her senior
year. She was selected to
play in the Idaho State High
School All-Star Basketball
Game this summer.
During her junior year, she
placed fifth in the 100
meters and also helped
Kootenai to a fifth place
finish in the medley relay
at the Idaho State 1A Track
and Field Championships.
Recently, Nyrop was
nominated for the North
Idaho Sports Banquet’s
Female Prep Athlete of the
year and Volleyball Player
of the Year.
“Hannah Nyrop is an
outstanding athlete who we
are extremely happy to have
enter our program,” LCSC
assistant coach Burdette
Greeny says. “Hannah
possesses great length and
physical gifts, a good
volleyball IQ, and a
competitive fire we desire
in our players. Her
participation and excellence
in four sports in high
school demonstrates her
overall athleticism, while
it also lends us to believe
with her focus solely on
volleyball, her ceiling is
unlimited and is as high as
she chooses to make it.”
Nyrop comes from an athletic
family. Her mother, Mandy
Love, was her high school
volleyball coach and played
volleyball and ran track at
Washington State University.
She also coached at the
University of Washington and
Gonzaga. Her late father,
Bill Nyrop, played hockey
and football at Notre Dame
and played in the National
Hockey League with Montreal
and Minnesota. He was part
of three Stanley Cup titles
with Canadiens during
1976-78, and played in the
NHL All-Star Game in 1978.
Her stepfather, John Love,
played football and wrestled
at Montana Western.
Also, her sister, Jessica
Nyrop, plays volleyball at
the University of San Diego
and was just named to the
USA Volleyball Women’s
Senior A2 National Team.
Hannah Nyrop has a 3.30 GPA
and plans to major in
English at LCSC.
“We have been very selective
in our recruitment of
outside hitters for the 2008
class and believe Hannah
fits the type of player we
have been signing the past
few months,” Greeny says.
“Players like Hannah, along
with our returning players,
plus the four other recruits
we have signed for next
year, were a principal
factor in our decision to
stay at Lewis-Clark
State.”
Nyrop is the fifth recruit
to sign with LCSC next
season. The other four are
Mt. Spokane High 6-0 middle
hitter Caitlin Barschig,
Colfax High setter Abby
Bruya, 6-1 middle hitter
Dani Barrett of Port
Angeles, Wash., and 6-2
right-side hitter and setter
Josi Lyman of LaGrande,
Ore.
The Warriors went 26-8 last
season and won both the
Frontier Conference regular
season and tournament titles
after being picked to finish
sixth in the league under
first-year coach Jennifer
Greeny. LCSC also won the
Region I title and was
seeded ninth at the 20-team
NAIA national tournament.
