John joined the Warriors at the beginning of spring semester after transferring from the University of Tennessee where he played in '97. Saw limited pitching duties, compiling a 2-0 record. Likely will join LCSC's starting rotation this season... has good movement on fastball and adds experience to pitching staff. Junior College: Played for coach Ken Gaylord at Cerritos JC in Southern California... went 11-3 as a freshman with a 3.30 ERA... started 15 games, appeared in 20 and finished four... named to All-South Coast Conference team. Repeated on All-South Coast following year and was first-team All-Southern California selection... finished sophomore season 11-5 with 2.36 ERA in 118.2 innings... struck out 68 while walking only 17... led Cerritos to Sun Coast Conference championship in '95 and second at the California State Junior College tournament. High School: four-year letterman at Waimea H.S. under coach Carl Fratecelli... two-time all-star and MVP... 6-0 record his senior year with 34 strikeouts and just two walks; 0.61 ERA in 34 innings...batted .323 with 16 RBI... helped team to state tournament at Rainbow Stadium where he pitched in the opening game.
Personal: Son of Stephen and Yvonne Ruiz... nicknamed Roo... born Jan. 26, 1976... has three brothers and one sister...majoring in Kinesiology.
