OVERVIEW
The Student Counseling Center (SCC) assists students in
moving toward their education goals by providing services such
as personal counseling, disabled student services, and health
care assistance. The SCC consists of two departments - the
Counseling Center and Health Services. The Counseling Center
focuses on the counseling and disability services. The Health
Services focuses on the students' physical wellbeing and houses
the Student Health Insurance Program (SHIP).
All Lewis-Clark State College (LCSC) students are eligible to
utilize services at the Counseling Center and Health Services
and do not need to be enrolled in SHIP to utilize either of
these services.
COUNSELING SERVICES
The SCC
office provides short-term developmental and preventive
counseling assistance for all LCSC students. At any age,
adjustment to college represents a major life transition.
Counselors seek to work with students to take personal
responsibility for their lives and their educational goals and
their future. Counselors are available to assist students with
a variety of personal and mental health issues, which may impede
academic progress and personal growth such as depression,
anxiety, relationship issues, dealing with loss, stress and
anger management concerns, career/life planning, and developing
social/emotional skills. Topical groups to address specific
concerns are offered for students on an as needed basis. All
information discussed with counselors is kept strictly
confidential and the department adheres to Idaho state law and
the American Counseling Association code of ethics.
DISABILITY SERVICES
The Office for Disability
Services establishes a campus environment that is accessible to
students with disabilities. The student, who self-identifies
with a disability or need, meets with a disability services
provider to assess the effects of the student’s disability on
the educational process. Students must provide documentation of
their disability and any subsequent determination of a
reasonable accommodation is determined on a case-by-case basis,
based on the documentation provided. Disability Services also
seeks to sensitize faculty and staff to the needs of students
with disabilities. Some of the services available are:
physical accessibility accommodation, academic adjustments,
auxiliary aids, assistive technology services, information on
audio-formatted texts, and assistance with note-taking, readers
and sign language interpreters as needed. Students are
strongly
encouraged to identify themselves before
arrival on campus and to make an appointment to discuss
documentation and services.
All information will be kept
confidential unless a release of information is signed by the
student.
HEALTH SERVICES
OVERVIEW
Health Services’
purpose is to provide the tools necessary to lead a long,
healthy, active life and to enhance retention of students
attending LCSC. This ambulatory clinic is located on campus and
provides high-quality, low-cost basic healthcare to LCSC
students and employees year round. By contracting with local
entities, the clinic is able to give appropriate referrals to
community resources and pass cost savings along to its
patients. There
are minimal fees for office visits with the health care
provider’s and additional charges for any further testing
ordered. In addition, the Health Services
nurse provides educational topics throughout the academic year.
STUDENT HEALTH INSURANCE PROGRAM (SHIP)
SHIP is an Idaho
State Board of Education mandate requiring full-time, full-fee
paying students (enrolled in 12 or more credits per semester) to
have health insurance. These students are automatically enrolled
in the SHIP and will not be required to complete insurance
forms. The cost of SHIP is added directly to the Student Fees.
Students who currently have medical insurance may waive SHIP.
Students should compare their present health insurance policy
against the plan coverage of SHIP. This information can be
found on the Student Health website under “SHIP Rates and
Coverage.” If their present plan is comparable in coverage they
may begin the waiver process. Students can access the waiver by
going to the student menu and clicking the SHIP Waiver. Only
waivers received through the WarriorWeb before fifth day will be
accepted. Students enrolled in 11 credits or less
are not eligible to participate in SHIP and are NOT required to
submit a waiver. Students
whose fees are reduced (i.e. an Idaho senior citizen whose fees
have been reduced) will not be enrolled.
CONFIDENTIALITY
All
patient/student information is confidential. Counseling Center
and Health Services are FERPA compliant; information in
students’ medical and behavioral health records are viewed only
by providers involved directly in the plan of care for each
individual. The student must provide written permission to the
staff authorizing release of any information to anyone other
than those professionals directly involved in the plan of care.
All information provided to the counseling, medical or office
staff is protected by Idaho state law and kept confidential,
except for limited release as required by law.
