A two-semester sequence may be started with the second semester, if necessary. Part-time or special students may, in some instances, with permission of the instructor involved, register for first-year studio courses - Painting I and Watercolor I, for example - without having taken the recommended pre-requisite courses. ART 100 - Survey of Art (3 cr.)An interdisciplinary consideration of the historical sequence of art styles; slides, lectures and discussions of architecture , painting, sculpture and other arts seen from the viewpoints of the philosopher, the artist and the layman. ART 111/112 - Drawing I (2 cr. each)Projects in basic representation and formal analysis; still life and landscape, some consideration of figure drawing. The use of charcoal, pencil, ink and certain color media. Limited to 20 students in each section. ART 121/122 - Visual Communication and the Design Process (3 cr. each)Lecture and studio exercises in the use of elements of form; lines, shapes, textures, values and colors. Experiments into the theory and nature of decorative and plastic pictorial and sculptural devices. ART 211 - Drawing II (3 cr.)Individual investigation of advanced concepts and techniques of drawing. Pre-requisites: ART 111 and 112. ART 231 - Painting I (3 cr.)Fundamentals of expressive paint application and color. Recommended pre-requisites: ART 111, 112, and 121 and 122. ART 235/236 - Composition (2 cr.) eachPainting and design problems concerned primarily with the structural use of the principles of organization in representational and nonrepresentational art. Recommended pre-requisites: ART 111, 112, 121 and 122. ART 237 - Secondary Materials and Methods (3 cr.)Methods, materials, theory and techniques for the secondary classroom; correlation of art with other secondary school subjects and activities. ART 241 - Sculpture I (3 cr.)Experiments in figurative and nonfigurative three-dimensional form, employing sculptural tools, materials and techniques. ART 251 - Relief Printmaking (3 cr.)Designed to give the art student a basic creative understanding of the problems and processes, materials and techniques of graphic design and printmaking. Recommended pre-requisites: ART 111, 112, 121 and 122. ART 261 - Ceramics I (3 cr.)Essential techniques of primitive and wheel pottery; clay preparation, design, glazing and firing. ART 281 - Watercolor I (3 cr.)The techniques of transparent and opaque watercolor painting. Recommended pre-requisites: ART 111, 112, 121, and 122. ART 289 - Basic Photography (3 cr.)An introduction to the art of photography. Basic darkroom and camera techniques. Students should plan on supplying cameras. Lab fee. Students also must buy some materials. ART 290/490 - Directed Study of Art (1-3 cr.)Pre-requisite: Permission of the department. ART 291/491 - Workshop in Art (1-3 cr.)
