EM 420 - Cataloging and Classification (4 cr.)Organization of print and non-print materials for effective service. Principles of cataloging, subject analysis, classification using the Dewey Decimal System. Maintenance of library catalogs, shelf list, divided and unified catalogs. EM 421 - Selection of Books and Related Materials (3 cr.)Familiarity with basic bibliographical tools in the field. Analysis of materials in relation to the needs, interests, and abilities of children and young people. Establishment of policies and criteria for the selection of book and non-book materials. EM 422 - Library Administration and Use of the School Library (3 cr.)Study of the objectives and functions of the school library with emphasis on the instructional materials center concept. Technical and administrative procedures; budget preparations; personnel, space and equipment needs; acquisition, preparation and circulation of materials (all forms); maintenance of the collection; standards for evaluation of school libraries; relations with other school libraries and the public library. Developing a functional library program. Methods of gaining students interests in the library and using it to the best advantage. EM 423 - Basic Reference Sources and Services (3 cr.)Emphasis on approaches to locating information; criteria for selection of reference materials. Study of a selected list of reference works. Recommended as an elective for non-library science students. EM 433 - Instructional Media Programs(3 cr.)An examination of instructional technology in education from practical and theoretical viewpoints, drawing from the fields of learning theory, communication, and audiovisual methods. Stresses the skills necessary for making appropriate choices among various teaching/learning media and methods and the administration of building-level school media programs. Content includes rationale and research supporting classroom mediation; information sources; selection and evaluation of materials; management of equipment and basic production processes; facilities use and planning. Recommended pre-requisite: familiarity with basic media equipment operation and production techniques. EM 290/490 - Directed Study in Educational Media
