FREN 101/102 – Elementary French I & II (4 cr. each)

A course to bring beginning students to an ACTFL proficiency level of novice-mid (for 101) and novice-high (for 102) through study and practice of communication skills, functional grammar, and the culture of French-speaking areas.  Pre-requisite for FREN 102: FREN 101 or placement.

FREN 201/202 - Intermediate French I & II (4 cr. each)

A second-year course to bring students to an ACTFL proficiency level of intermediate-low (for 201) and intermediate-mid (for 202) through practice of communicative skills, review of grammar, and study of the culture of French-speaking areas. Emphasis on patterns of intonation and development of reading skills. C.R. Pre-requisite for FREN 201: FREN 102 or advanced placement; for FREN 202: FREN 201 or placement.

FREN 209 - Intermediate French Lab (1 cr.)

Pass/Fail credit only. May be repeated for a total of two credits. Co-requisite: Enrollment in Intermediate French.

FREN 309 - French Conversation Lab (1 cr.)

Pass/Fail credit only. May be repeated for a total of two credits. Co-requisite: Enrollment in FREN 310.

FREN 310 - French Conversation and Composition (3 cr.)

Exercises and consolidates writing, speaking, and listening at the ACTFL proficiency level of intermediate-high. Emphasis on critical thinking in French about contemporary and cultural topics. Pre-requisite: FREN 202 or the permission of the instructor.

FREN 320 - French Literature (3 cr.)

An introduction to representative authors and to techniques of analysis and critical reading; an opportunity to develop reading strategies in French. Writing integrated. Recommended pre-requisite: FREN 202 or the equivalent.

FREN 330 - Methods of Teaching Foreign Languages (3 cr.)

Pre-requisite: FREN 202 or the equivalent.

FREN 380 - Credit for Study of French Abroad (3-12 cr.)

Allows students to generate college credit for study of French language and culture abroad. Study must be accomplished in recognized language institutes or programs; study must be approved in advance of registration. Pre-requisite: FREN 202 and permission of instructor and chairperson of the division.

FREN 425 - The Realistic and Naturalistic Novel (3 cr.)

A study of representative novelistic masterpieces of the nineteenth century, including Le Rouge et le Noir and works by Balzac, Flaubert, and Zola. Writing integrated.  Pre-requisite: Advanced reading fluency in French and permission of the instructor.
