LWOBT 220 - Ethics and Professional Responsibility (2 cr.)Provides knowledge necessary to make decisions concerning ethics applicable to the legal professional. Develops sensitivity and direction for the paralegal concerning future situations with ethical overtones. LWOBT 224 - Introduction to Law (3 cr.)An introduction to the American legal system and the role the law plays in society. Course will focus on the following areas: Foundation of American Law, Dimensions of Public Law, and Dimensions of Private Law. LWOBT 230 - Legal Research & Writing I (3 cr.)Students will learn to identify, locate, and properly cite primary and secondary authorities. The course will examine both on-line sources and sources available in a law library. Students will learn the elements of a Supreme Court Opinion and will be introduces to the case brief. Recommended pre-requisites: ENGL 101 or GENTC 122 or consent of instructor. LWOBT 233 - Bankruptcy Law and Procedures (3 cr.)Study of Bankruptcy Act relating to filing and completion of bankruptcy and wage earner proceedings. LWOBT 240 - Law Office Management (3 cr.)Concepts of law office management to equip students with basic skills to develop effective strategies in competently managing a law office. LWOBT 243 - Administrative Law/Worker's Compensation (2 cr.)Provides overview of policies and procedures required when dealing with state and federal agencies. LWOBT 265 - Business Law (3 cr.)Course includes introduction to contract, consumer, personal, criminal, real and personal property law, torts, the court system, and contemporary legal problems in the business environment. LWOBT 319 - Fundamentals of Paralegalism (2 cr.)Examines and analyzes the history, attributes necessary for success, and the various opportunities available for today’s Paralegal. Pre-requisites: ENGL 101 or GENTC 122 or consent of instructor. LWOBT 321 - Real Estate Law and Procedures (3 cr.)Student study the principles and theories of the law of real estate. In addition, the students will study the procedures and documents necessary to apply such theory to assist a lawyer practicing in the field of Real Estate. Pre-requisites: LWOBT 230 or consent of instructor. LWOBT 322 - Paralegal Procedures for Criminal Law (3 cr.)This course is designed to give students an understanding of the principles of criminal law, criminal procedures, the criminal justice system, and the Constitution. Students will understand the system and procedure necessary to perform law office procedures with relation to criminal law. LWOBT 323 - Civil Litigation (3 cr.)The course will take students on an in-depth study of the civil litigation process. Chronologically, the student will study the steps and tasks involved in a civil law suit from the initial client interview to the enforcement of a judgment. Throughout the course student swill build proficiency in the specific competencies required of them as a member of the legal team. Pre-requisites: OAOBT 173 and OAOBT 274 or consent of instructor. LWOBT 331 - Legal Research & Writing II (3 cr.)Continuation of LWOBT 230 with an emphasis in legal writing. Pre-requisites: LWOBT 230 or consent of instructor. LWOBT 232 - Wills, Trusts & Estates (3 cr.)Provides requirements and formalities of drafting and executing wills and trusts including probating wills, intestacy law and estate administration. LWOBT 341 - Business Organizations (2 cr.)Study of the substantive and procedural law surrounding the five major business structures: sole proprietorships, general partnerships, limited partnerships, limited liability companies, and corporations. Emphasis is placed on organizational structure and the manner in which business organizations are formed, operated, maintained, and dissolved. Pre-requisite: LWOBT 230 or consent of instructor. LWOBT 342 - Family Law (3 cr.)This course examines the area of family law, including divorce, separation, custody, adoption, guardianship, and court procedures. In addition, students will prepare a variety of legal documents necessary in working with a family law attorney. LWOBT 345 - Tort Law (3 cr.)Introduces students to the law of torts and contracts with an emphasis on understanding interrelationships among concepts. The law of torts is concerned with an individual's rights with regard to civil wrongs. Pre-requisite: ENGL 101 or GENTC 122 or consent of instructor. LWOBT 367 - Internship (1-6 cr.)Field experience working as a paralegal in local law offices or other law-related offices. Pre-requisite: consent of instructor. |
