MUS 101 - Survey of Music (3 cr.)

A study of the major contributions to world music including an historical survey of stylistic and formal developments. Emphasis on appreciative skills.

MUS 110, 210, 310, 410 - Applied Music (1-2 cr. each)

Individual instruction in voice, piano, organ, band and orchestral instruments. Each course may be repeated for credit. Note: Students must have the approval of the instructor before enrolling in applied music lessons. Students not obtaining the instructor's approval may be dis-enrolled.

Note: Fees per semester for lessons in applied music: One lesson per week, one-half hour (1 credit) - Fee: $150.00; Two lessons per week, two-half hours (2 credits) - Fee: $250.00.

MUS103/303 - Concert Choir (1 cr.)

Experience in singing traditional choral literature, vocal jazz, and contemporary music. Enrollment subject to instructor's approval. May be repeated or a maximum of 4 credits at each level.

MUS 106/306 - Jazz Band (1 cr.)

Performance of standard literature and musical styles. May be repeated for a maximum of 4 credits at each level. Membership is determined by the instructor.

MUS 145 - Beginning Piano and Keyboard Theory (1 cr.)

(repeatable for total of 2 credits)

Fundamentals of keyboard technique and basic keyboard theory.

MUS 146 - Intermediate Piano (2 cr.)

(repeatable for total of 4 credits)

Class instruction for non-beginners. Recommended pre-requisite: MUS 145 or permission of instructor.

MUS 147 - Advanced Piano (2 cr.)

(repeatable for total of 4 credits)

Class instruction for advanced students. Recommended pre-requisite: 146 or permission of instructor.

MUS 221 - Music of Western Civilization (3cr.)

History of music from antiquity through the 20th Century. Emphasis is on stylistic developments. Recommended pre-requisite: MUS 110.

MUS 241 - Music Fundamentals I (4 cr.)

An introduction to the techniques and materials of diatonic and chromatic tonal music. Includes composition, ear-training, and formal analysis. Recommended pre-requisite: MUS 145.

MUS 242 - Music Fundamentals II (4 cr.)

A continuation of MUS 241 emphasizing traditional form analysis, 20th century techniques and forms, and creative composition. Recommended pre-requisite: MUS 241.

MUS 265/365 - Vocal Jazz Ensemble (2 cr. each)

 (repeatable for total of 2 credits each)

Traditional four-part a cappella music as well as contemporary jazz. Pre-requisite: instructor's approval.

MUS 266/366 - Instrumental Ensemble (1 cr. each)

Performance of a variety of ensembles. May be repeated at each level. Pre-requisite: instructor's approval.

MUS 267/367 - Guitar Ensemble (1cr. each)

(repeatable for total of 2 credits each) Performance of guitar ensemble literature and musical styles. Pre-requisite: instructor's approval.

MUS 268/368 - Chamber Singers (2 cr. each)

A chamber vocal group (8 to 12 singers) which sings Madrigals - renaissance through contemporary. Performances vary. Community programs, campus , concert, private functions (minimum of two to four per semester). Pre-requisite: instructor's approval.

MUS 331 - Conducting (3 cr.)

Baton technique, score reading, general rehearsal/ performance techniques. Emphasis on choral conducting, especially for elementary teachers. Recommended pre-requisites: MUS 221, 241, 242.

MUS 290/490 - Directed Study in Music (3 cr.)

Pre-requisite: Permission of the department and senior standing.

 

MUS 291/491 - Workshop in Music (1-3 cr.)
 

MUS 292/492 - Special Topics in Music (1-3 cr.)

 

MUS 296/496 - Cooperative Education (Variable cr.)

This course combines instruction with on-the-job experience and thus add a new dimension and relevance to the student's education. Contact the division chairperson for further information.
