NU 203 - Health Assessment (3 cr.)Theory and supervised lab to introduce assessment skills and tools for a holistic assessment of the health status of individuals, families, groups and communities. Applies the nursing process to analyze assessment data and generates nursing diagnoses. Applies teaching-learning concepts and principles of communication to physical assessments and health histories. Pre-requisites: Admission to the BSN Program or on a space-available basis determined by course instructor. Co-requisites: NU 205, NU 210, BIOL 312, and HLTH 353. NU 205 - Fundamentals of Nursing (4 cr.)Theory, supervised lab and clinical practice in actual and simulated situations to develop competency in basic psychomotor and theoretical nursing skills needed to care for clients in acute, sub-acute, chronic, and community-based nursing health care facilities. Integrates the application of critical thinking skills, normal growth and development, principles of documentation, caring behaviors across the lifespan, communication skills, and the theoretical basis for skills to plan nursing actions as well as complimentary therapies and levels of prevention. Pre/Co-requisites: NU 203, NU 210, BIOL 312, HLTH 353. NU 210 - Foundations of Nursing (3 cr.)Introduction to the culture and profession of nursing, philosophy of the BSN Program, professional nursing roles, nursing history, nursing research, adult learning theory, standards of practice, legal and ethical frameworks, informed caring, the nursing process, baccalaureate nursing education, legal/ethical issues, and theoretical frameworks for nursing practice. Examines the ways that nurses learn, know, acquire knowledge, and critically think. Pre-requisites: Admission to the BSN Program. Co-requisites: NU 203, NU 205, NU 205, BIOL 312, and HLTH 353. NU 213 - Pharmacotherapeutics in Nursing (3 cr.)Applies the concepts of pathophysiology and nursing roles in pharmacologic therapy. Examines principles of pharmacology within a body systems framework while emphasizing alterations in health patterns throughout the life span. Pre-requisites: All preceding nursing and support courses. Co-requisites: NU 220 and NU 222. NU 220 - Health Theory I: Vulnerable Populations (5 cr.)Introduction to the role of the nurse and therapeutic nursing interventions for vulnerable individuals within families across the life span and in the areas of mental health and maternal/child health. Applies the caring framework and nursing process to health promotion strategies for vulnerable individuals. Develops a theoretical base and affective skills for application in NU 222, Practicum I: Vulnerable Populations. Pre-requisites: All prior nursing and support courses. Co-requisites: NU 213, NU 222, Literature Core, and ANTH 102. NU 222 - Practicum I: Vulnerable Populations (3 cr.)Clinical practice to apply informed caring, theoretical knowledge, and basic nursing skills to the care of vulnerable individuals within the community, acute care mental health, and maternal/child health settings. Pre-requisites: All prior nursing and support courses. Co-requisites: NU 213, NU 220, Literature Core, and ANTH 102. NU 306 - Health Assessment for Registered Nurses (3 cr.)Theory and supervised lab for the RN student to refine basic assessment skills and introduce tools for a holistic assessment of the health status of individuals, families, groups and communities. Applies the nursing process to analyze assessment data and generates nursing diagnoses. Applies teaching-learning concepts and principles of communication to physical assessment and health histories. Pre-requisites: RN licensure or permission of the instructor. NU 325 - Health Theory II: Transitions in Health (4 cr.)Builds on theory from NU 221 to examine the nursing care for individuals across the lifespan experiencing alteration in health. Integrates and builds on current nursing knowledge in addition to having the student apply the nursing process, theoretical knowledge of psychomotor motor skills and critical thinking skills. Emphasizes human responses due to transitions in health such as acute illness, surgery, chronic illness, long-term care and rehabilitation. Focuses on informed nurse caring and therapeutic nursing interventions to restore health or facilitate adaptation. Pre-requisites: Completion of all prior nursing and support courses through NU 222. Co-requisites: NU 332, NU 334, COMM 204, Art Core. NU 332 - Practicum II: Transitions in Health (5 cr.)Clinical practice that applies theory from NU 325 to individuals within acute, long-term care, and rehabilitation settings. Pre-requisites: All prior nursing and support courses through NU 222. Co-requisites: NU 325, NU 334, Art Core, and COMM 204. NU 333 - Nursing InformaticsComputer-intensive investigation of nursing informatics including health care information systems and the roles of the professional nurse as a member of the profession and designer/manager of care. Pre-requisites: Admission to the BSN Program or permission of the instructor. Co-requisites: Basic student: NU 325, NU 332, Art Core, COMM 204. RN Student: NU 370 as co- or pre-requisite. NU 334 - Family and Group Dynamics (2 cr.)Applies functional health patterns, nursing assessment skills, therapeutic communication skills, and counseling skills to the family and group. Integrates family nursing models and group theory with the professional nurse roles of leader and professional. Pre-requisites: Admission to the BSN Program or permission of the instructor. Co-requisites: Basic Student: NU 325 and NU 332, Art Core, COMM 204. RN Student: NU 370 as pre- or co-requisite. NU 341 - Health Theory III: Acute Alterations in Health (3 cr.)Builds on the basic sciences and health theory from NU 221 and NU 331. Integrates nursing knowledge and applies the nursing process and critical thinking skills to plan for informed nursing care for individuals across the life span who are experiencing alterations in human response patterns due to acute and complex illness. Pre-requisites: Completion of all nursing and support courses through NU 334. Co-requisites: NU 333, NU 342, PHIL 120, PSYC 300. NU 342 - Practicum III: Acute Alterations in Health (5 cr.)Clinical practice that applies theory from NU 341 to adult and pediatric individuals across the life span who are experiencing acute and complex nursing needs. Co-requisites: NU 333, NU 341, PHIL 120, PSYC 300. NU 370 - Transitions to Baccalaureate Nursing (3 cr.)Develops a conceptual basis of nursing and applies information processing skills to socialize the Registered Nurse student into the BSN Program. In-depth analysis of the philosophy of the BSN program, professional nursing roles, nursing history, using nursing research, adult learning theory, standards of practice, informed caring, baccalaureate nursing education, legal/ethical issues and theoretical frameworks for nursing practice. Examines the ways that nurses learn, know, acquire knowledge, and critically think. Pre-requisite: RN licensure or permission of the instructor. NU 440 - Rural Community Partnerships/Public Health Nursing (3 cr.)Analyzes the concepts, principles and theories for rural community and public health nursing practice. Applies basic epidemiology principles and the nursing process in the care of populations, communities and groups in rural settings. Explores health and social policy and the impact on rural, urban, and global health care systems. Pre-requisites: Admission to the BSN Program and completion of all prior nursing and support courses. Co-requisites: NU 442, NU 473, NU 475, Core 350 or 351. (starts Spring 2004) NU 441 - Community Partnerships/Public Health Nursing (2 cr.) - (no longer offered after Spring 2003)Analyzes the concepts, principles, and theories for community health nursing practice. Utilizes basic epidemiology , public health concepts, and applies the nursing process to populations, communities and groups within unstructured health care settings such as schools or work sites. Pre-requisites: Admission to the BSN Program and completion of all prior nursing and support courses. Co-requisites: NU 442, NU 473, NU 475, Core 350 or 351. NU 442 - Practicum : Community Partnerships and Public Health Nursing (3 cr.)Clinical practice that applies theory from NU 441 with the community as client. Develops community diagnosis as the basis for implementation of community-level interventions for health promotion in public health departments, schools, camps, and community organizations. Pre-requisites: Admission to the BSN Program and completion of all prior nursing and support courses. Co-requisites: NU 441, NU 473, NU 475, Core 350 or 351. NU 444 - Rural Practice Issues (2 cr.) (no longer offered after Spring 2003)Introduction to the issues surrounding rural health care delivery such as cost, access and utilization of health care services. Explores rural vulnerable populations and the role of the nurse as an interdisciplinary team member. Pre-requisite: Admission to the BSN Program or permission of the instructor. NU 470 - Health Care Finance - (3 cr.)To provide the student with a basic understanding of the world of health care from the economic and financial point of view. Among other things, the student will gain an understanding of the business and financial environments in which health care finds itself; general accounting, cost and financial concepts; budgeting processes; analysis of basic financial statements; diagnostic related groups; the managed care environment; staffing patterns; and the use of financial information in the decision-making process. Pre-requisite: Admission to the BSN Program and completion of all prior nursing and support courses. Co-requisites: NU 471, NU 472, NU 483, PSYC 385, Core 350 or 351. NU 471 - Leadership/Management Theory (3 cr.)Introduces the basic theories of management and leadership within the context of nursing and health care and through the lenses of knowledge, skills, self, environment, change and the business of leadership. Analyzes issues of professional nursing practice and policy making. Pre-requisites: Admission to the BSN Program and completion of all prior nursing and support courses. Co-requisites: NU 470, NU 472, NU 483, PSYC 385, Core 350 or 351. NU 472 - Practicum: Leadership/Management (2 cr.)Clinical practice to apply the theoretical concepts of leadership and management addressed in NU 471. Utilizes the lenses of knowledge, skills, self, environment, change and the business of leadership in a variety of settings. Pre-requisites: Admission to the BSN Program and completion of all prior nursing and support courses. Co-requisites: NU 470, NU 471, PSYC 385, Core 350 or 351. NU 473 - Preceptorship (2 cr.)Culminating clinical practice during the final semester of the BSN Program. Applies the nursing process, informed caring framework, and nursing intervention classification systems to individuals and groups across the life span at a variety of health-care environments. Requires the synthesis of knowledge and skills from all courses in the BSN Program. Pre-requisites: Admission to the BSN Program and completion of all prior nursing and support courses and all LCSC core courses. Co-requisites: NU 440, NU 442, NU 473, NU 475, Core 351or 351. NU 475 - Senior Capstone (2 cr.)Synthesis of all knowledge and skills through a capstone experience in the final semester of the BSN Program. Applies in-depth knowledge of nursing science and research to a clinical situation or health care issue. Pre-requisites: Admission to the BSN Program and completion of all prior nursing and support courses. Co-requisites: NU 440, NU 442, NU 473, Core 351 or 351. NU 480 – Neonatal Resuscitation (1 cr.) (elective)This course is intended primarily for persons who may be required to assist with the resuscitation of a newborn infant in a hospital setting. The material used in this course is provided by the American Heart Association of the American Academy of Pediatrics. Pre-requisites: Permission of the instructor. NU 483 - Preceptorship: Vulnerable Populations (2 cr.)Culminating seminar and clinical focusing on vulnerable populations during the senior year of the BSN program. Applies the nursing process, informed caring framework, and nursing intervention classification systems to individuals and groups within community, acute care, mental health, maternal/child health settings. Requires the synthesis of knowledge and skills from previous courses in the BSN program. Pre-requisites: Admission to the BSN program and completion of all prior nursing and support courses, and all LCSC core courses except 350 or 351 which may be taken concurrently. Co-requisites: NU 470, NU 471, NU 472, PSYC 385, Core 350 or 351. NU 290/490 - Directed Study in Nursing (1-3 cr.)
