OAOBT 172 – Medical Terminology (4 cr.)

This course provides students with a working knowledge of the language of medicine.  This includes combing of roots, prefixes, and suffixes to form medical terms; linking medical terms, anatomy, and physiology to the office processes encountered in a medical facility.

OAOBT 173 - Legal Procedures I (3 cr.)

Instruction includes legal terminology, document format and preparation, and procedures as applied to a legal office. Credit based on achievement of competency goals. Pre-requisite: Admission to Legal Secretary program or consent of instructor.

OAOBT 175 - Administrative Medical Assisting I (3 cr.)

Medical office personnel responsibilities in administration, financial management, and medical record keeping; plus ethical and legal obligations of the staff in a medical facility. Recommended co-requisite: OAOBT 172

OAOBT 220 - Legal Terminology (3 cr.)

Provides students with the necessary knowledge of legal terminology to perform duties including transcription and preparation of legal documents.

OAOBT 221 - Legal Transcription (3 cr.)

Provides students with transcription skills to format and style a variety of legal documents.

OAOBT 223 - Medical Terminology for Legal Offices (2 cr.)

Study of medical terminology used in legal cases or lawsuits.

OAOBT 233 - Office Procedures (3 cr.)

Teaching technical office skills required (filing, telephone techniques, mailing procedures, etc.). Includes preparing students to dress professionally and project a professional image.

OAOBT 250 - Clinical Medical Assisting I (3 cr.)

To prepare the student with a basic knowledge and skills needed to perform the job duties of a medical assistant.  The course provides theory and practice in clinical procedures for the medical assistant student who will work as a member of the health care team in ambulatory setting such as medical offices and clinics.  Pre-requisites:  GENTC 122, OAOBT 172, BIOL 252, and current certification in CPR for healthcare providers.

OAOBT 251 - Medical Transcription I (3 cr.)

Techniques and transcription procedures for all forms of medical dictation. Recommended: OAOBT 172, WPOBT 101, GBOBT 116 

OAOBT 252 - Clinical Experience (1-6)

Field experience in local doctors' office or medical facility. Pre-requisite: Permission of instructor.

OAOBT 253 - Legal Office Experience (1-6 cr.)

Field experience in a local law-related office providing supervised training in legal tasks.

OAOBT 254 – Machine Transcription (3 cr.)

Instruction and intensive practice in transcription procedures of mailable business copy from voice transcribers.  Pre-requisites:  WPOBT 101 and GENTC 122.

OAOBT 257 - Legal Secretary Student Association (1 cr.)

Professional development of legal secretaries in community, regions, and nationally. May be repeated for total of eight credits.

OAOBT 259 - Patient Record Systems (3 cr.)

Provides instruction in formatting and maintaining patient financial records in a medical facility. Utilizes a computer software program.

OAOBT 260 – Clinical Medical Assisting II (3 cr.)

This course will provide the theory and practice in clinical assisting including specialty exams and procedures, i.e. radiology and diagnostic imaging, electrocardiography, urinalysis, specimen collection and preparation, venipuncture, and medication administration.  Pre-requisite:  OAOBT 250

OAOBT 261 - Medical Transcription II (3 cr.)

Continuation of transcription techniques and procedures required for all forms of medical dictation. Recommended: OAOBT 251

OAOBT 274 - Legal Procedures II (3 cr.)

Continuation of skill development begun in OAOBT 173.

OAOBT 275 - Medical Office ICD9/CPT Coding (3 cr.)

This class will prepare students for insurance billing in a medical office.  Completion of insurance claim forms and the governing regulations will be covered in-depth.  Students will also learn how to code fee slips, chart notes, and operative reports through the use of ICD-9 books for diagnostic coding and Current Procedural Terminology coding books as prepared by the American Medical Association, latest edition.  Pre-requisitesOAOBT 172, OAOBT 259.

OAOBT 297 – Administrative Assistant Simulation (3 cr.)

Students nearing completion of the AA.S. degree in Administrative Assistant will have an opportunity to synthesize and apply their knowledge of document preparation and retrieval, keying from rough draft, internal communications, databases and spreadsheet applications, transcription as well as other office activities.  Upon completion students will demonstrate practical and working ability in completing tasks learned from individual courses required for a degree in Administrative Asst.
