Course Descriptions  -  Lewis-Clark State College 2002-2003 Catalog

PTOBT 101 - Introduction to Printing Technology (3 cr.)

This introduces students to Graphic Arts/Printing Technology. This will include a short history of communication followed by a general overview of prepress and preparation basics, printing processes, desktop publishing, finishing and binding, workflow, publishing, new media, typography, and design.  Students will also look at the future of communications, new issues in the field, and current industry trends.

PTOBT 103 - Printer's Math (3 cr.)

Printer's math is specifically designed for Graphic Arts/Printing Technology students.  This course focuses on applications in the printing industry.  Concepts taught include: problem solving techniques, measurement, percentages, design and copy preparation, scaling techniques, line length, page depth calculations, mathematics and statistics essential for effective printing management, paper cutting calculations, paper usage and production planning estimations, describing mathematical relationships between variables, unit analysis, and formula manipulation.  A student must attain a COMPASS score of 46 or higher before registering for this course.

PTOBT 112 - Layout and Design (3 cr.)

Preparation of camera-ready art through paste-up methods, using mechanical overlays, clip art, and diffusion transfer processes.

PTOBT 115 – Digital Image Preparation (3 cr.)

This course presents the concept of high end printing utilizing Adobe PageMaker.  Printed materials need to be laid out for press production and finishing procedures—we will “work backwards” with the total printing production in mind.  Students will understand crop marks, document size, press sheet size, among other basic needs in the print world.

PTOBT 125 - Image Assembly and Platemaking (3 cr.)

Basic film assembly and platemaking techniques including layout of masking sheets, stripping and platemaking operations and proofing color.  Four color process stripping and platemaking included.

PTOBT 131 - Offset Press I (7 cr.)

Introductory offset presswork and pressroom procedures, including feeding and delivery systems, press adjustments, chemistry, papers, and ink.

PTOBT 133 - Finishing & Binding (3 cr.)

Theory and practice in basic bindery and finishing operations including cutting, folding, drilling, stitching, binding, scoring and perforating.

PTOBT 201 - Advanced Digital Image Preparation (3 cr.)

Advanced digital preparation methods, emphasizing system and file management, file compression and conversion, and network operating systems.  This course teaches the function and usage of digital imagesetters and to identify and compare digital proofing systems.  Students will demonstrate the ability to preflight and apply file repair procedures.

PTOBT 211 - Advanced Printing Techniques (6 cr.)

Application of knowledge and skills learned in previous courses to produce printed projects. Specialization in areas of offset press, typesetting and paste-up, or camera.

PTOBT 212 – Design and Digital Photography (3 cr.)

This course in graphic presentations is concerned with the effective use of communication in the world of graphic design.  This will include color relationships, exploring visual elements in design, and the use of type in communication.  This course examines the importance of graphic symbols as a “business entity” with logos in design.  The role of the Art Director in multifaceted design projects will be examined.  A team environment will further enhance leadership, communication, and negotiation skills.  In the process of creating design we will stay clear of “clip art” and instead explore the realm of photo manipulation using computers.  Students will learn to scan and become versed in PhotoShop and digital cameras.

PTOBT 214 – Marketing and Media Relations (3 cr.)

The role of design in advertising will be emphasized in this course.  Marketing research, objectives, and strategies will be explored and applied.  This course identifies the components of the design process.  Problem identification and research methods will be explored and design solutions appropriate to target market will be emphasized.  The course will include generation exercises and a concentration on design purpose and function.  “Does it work” campaign strategy based on media and an introduction to media buying and marketing realities will be investigated and applied.

PTOBT 221 - Printing Management (3 cr.)

Application of knowledge and skills learned in previous courses to manage all printshop functions; computer estimating program based on cost centers is assembled and tested. Pre-requisite: All first-year courses.

PTOBT 225 - Advanced Image Assembly and Platemaking (3 cr.)

Advanced film assembly and platemaking, troubleshooting and proofing techniques.  An introduction to current imposition software will also be included.   Pre-requisite:  PTOBT 125

PTOBT 228 – Technical Layout and Imposition (3 cr.)

The importance of imposition and trapping will be emphasized in this course.  This course is intended to be used as a bridge between the digital techniques used for imposition today and the traditional photomechanical approach used for most of the 20th century.  The course material will lead students through the vocabulary, tools, and processes of image assembly, presenting the details of this vanishing profession while illuminating the ways in which these historic techniques connect to the computer-based workflow of today.  Students will learn imposition and trapping standards, both conventional and digital, and know that they are dictated by press and bindery.  Included will be an introduction to current digital imposition and digital trapping software.

PTOBT 231 - Offset Press II (6 cr.)

Continuation of general presswork, pressroom procedures, chemistry, papers and ink, including multicolor printing, and coated stock. Recommended for offset press operators. Pre-requisite: PTOBT 131.
