Swett to display work at Center on Feb. 9
Tapestry artist Sara Swett will have her work on display during “Sara Swett: Threads” on Feb. 9-March 3 at the Lewis-Clark State College’s Center for Arts & History, located at 415 Main St. in Lewiston.
An opening reception will be held at the Center on Friday, Feb. 9 at 5-8 p.m. at the Center to help kick off Swett’s display. The reception is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be provided.
Swett is from Moscow and has had her work displayed throughout the country for nearly a decade. She is one of a few full-time weavers in the United States and her works go for thousands of dollars and are collected throughout the country.
Her work is a reflection of the Palouse landscape, her family, friends, and stories. Her love for the Palouse landscape is evident in many of her works.
“What I love are the undulating hills where I live – endless, sensual and covered with wheat, lentils and sometimes snow, they look like multicolor nudes snoozing over the earth; also magic, water, glass and interesting stories,” she says.
“In tapestry, the image is the fabric – without the former, the latter is merely a pile of yarn,” Swett says. “The artist, then, creates order. She tells stories, builds images, and captures moments in time in cloth, even as they unfold.”
Swett, who has had several articles published on her and her work, also wrote a book “Kids Weaving” that was published in 2005. Swett describes herself as a writer, painter, knitter and weaver who “drinks tea with friends (both real and imaginary) in her studio in Moscow.”
She currently also has work on exhibit in St. Louis, Mo.
