Professional-Technical Preview Day is Feb. 13

Approximately 400 high school students from regional and private schools in north central Idaho and southwestern Washington will take part in the annual Lewis-Clark State College Professional-Technical Preview Day on Feb. 13 on the LCSC campus.

The event, sponsored by LCSC’s Professional-Technical Programs, spotlights 18 professional and technical programs offered at the Lewiston campus. The event, which is held each year during Vocational Education Week, gives juniors and seniors in high school the opportunity to preview a variety of careers in professional and technical fields.

Students, teachers and counselors are scheduled to arrive around 9 a.m. at the LCSC Activity Center and will receive information packets. They will also fill out information cards.

At 9:30 a.m., the event begins with a welcome session. Following a short welcome address from both LCSC Dean for Professional-Technical Programs Rob Lohrmeyer and Coordinator of New Student Recruitment Soo Lee Bruce-Smith, free T-shirts will be tossed into the crowd. Also, LCSC will award $500 scholarships to three area students who plan on attending LCSC.

Also, the winner of the poster contest will be announced. The contest was for the high school students to promote Professional-Technical Preview Day. The winner will be recognized and receive a $50 gift certificate, while the teacher of the student will receive a $100 gift certificate to be used for classroom supplies and materials.

Students will be divided into two groups – A and B. Group A will leave at the Activity Center at 9:45 a.m. in small group guided tours to preview the programs offered in the professional-technical divisions and meet with faculty and staff. Students will preview two short program presentations or one long presentation in an area they expressed a particular interest in and have been assigned to. They will have the opportunity to engage in some hands-on activities and learn more about the program.

The programs that will be previewed in short presentations are Administrative Assistant, Bookkeeping, Business Management, Early Child Development, Graphic Arts and Printing Technology, Legal Secretary/Paralegal, Medical Assistant/Medical Office, Web Development, Auto Mechanics Technology, Automated Manufacturing Technology, Collision Repair, Diesel Technology, Engineering Technology, Information Systems Analysis, and Industrial Electronics Technology. Longer presentations will be in Hospitality Management, Heating, A/C & Appliance Technology, and Welding Technology.

While Group A is visiting technical programs, students in Group B will be given a full campus tour.

At 11:15 a.m., the groups will meet back at the Activity Center and Group B students will preview Professional-Technical programs, while Group A students tour the LCSC campus.

At 12:45 p.m., students again will meet up for a pizza lunch in the bleachers of the Activity Center. Students will then leave the campus at 1:15 p.m.

Preview Day will attract students from north central Idaho and southeastern Washington. Home-school students as well as students from charter and private schools also are expected to attend.

Sponsors for Preview Day include the Associated Students of LCSC, Idaho Impressions, Idaho Truck Sales, LCSC Student Services, Tri-State Memorial Hospital, St. Joseph’s Regional Medical Center and Western States Equipment.
