PDD will feature Embracing Diversity
Embracing Diversity will be the theme for the 5th annual Lewis-Clark Valley Professional Development Day, which will be held April 25 at the Clarkston Quality Inn, located at 700 Port Drive.
The event is sponsored by the Classified Staff Organization and Professional Staff Organization at Lewis-Clark State College.
Jeff Guillory, Diversity Education Manager at Washington State University, will lead the event. He is responsible for the Diversity Education Program at the WSU for faculty, staff, and students. He organizes and facilitates training sessions, and plans “Train-the-Trainer” sessions for potential leaders. He has a combined 25 years experience in the Human Resources profession with the State of Idaho, the City of Lewiston, and WSU. Guillory, who resides in Lapwai, is also a 12-year professional consultant in the field of Organizational Development, Conflict Management, Diversity Education, Teambuilding, and is a Youth Motivational speaker.
The cultural competency/diversity conference will help participants gain a new perspective on differences among people and how to be successful in a diverse environment. The conference will show diversity is more than culture because it involves a variety of aspects that make everyone special. Aspects such as age, birth order, which hand people write with, and many other types of differences will be explored. Attendees will be eligible for a cultural competency/diversity national certificate at the completion of the conference.
Registration for the conference, which includes lunch, is $60 per person, but is reduced to $55 a person for a group of three or more who register together. The registration fee for LCSC employees and students is $40 per person. Pre-registration is required to attend the conference and registration forms can be found online at http://www.lcsc.edu/pdd/
The conference begins with registration and a continental breakfast at 8:30 a.m., followed by short welcomes from LCSC President Dene Thomas and Clarkston Chamber of Commerce President Mark Folk at 9 a.m.
The first session is at 9:15-10:15 a.m. and features some diversity exercises and definitions. After a 15-minute break, the second session will look at the forces that drive diversity issues. The session also will feature a psychogeometrics video, which helps participants understand themselves and each other.
After lunch at 11:30 a.m.-12:45 p.m., the third session will run to 3 p.m. and features scenario exercises and stereotyping videos. Participants will examine stereotyping and taking an honest look at their perceptions of stereotypical situations.
Following a 15-minute break, the final session at 3:15-4:15 p.m., and will feature scenario exercises with team building. The group exercises will deal with difficult employees and positive outcomes.
During lunch and prior to the conclusion of the conference, drawings will be held to give away door prizes, which include two round-trip tickets from Lewiston to Seattle and a free night’s stay at the Lodge at River’s Edge in Orofino.
