Latanes to visit LCSC campus March 26-28
Visiting artist Dawn Latane and visiting scholar David Latane will be on the Lewis-Clark State College campus on March 26-28 as part of the Humanities Division Visiting Artist and Scholar Program.
The Latanes will present a public lecture entitled “Transience and Transience and Permanence in Landscapes” on March 27 at 7 p.m. in the Silverthorne Theatre. The joint lecture will focus on Ian Hamilton Finlay’s garden Stonypath and the Scottish landscape. The lecture will explore how Finlay moved out of the concrete poetry movement of the 1960s to re-shape the landscape of a Scottish croft into a unique sculpture/poetry garden.
The lecture is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served following the lecture.
The presentation will feature photographs of the Stonypath garden taken by the Latanes during visits. The Latanes also will talk about the artistic, historical and literary aspects of Finlay’s work.
David Latane also will give a talk on March 26 at 7 p.m. in Room 135 of the LCSC Activity Center West area that is free and open to the public. He will discuss his experiences with small presses and the book trade.
On March 28, David Latane will discuss print-making, in conjunction with the Monoprint Guild of New England Exhibition, at the Center for Arts & History at 7 p.m. The discussion is free and open to the public.
Dawn Latane is a practicing, widely-exhibited, and teaching artist adept in several media, including print-making, drawing, oil, acrylics, and etchings. She is currently a Visiting Assistant Professor of Fine Arts at the University of Richmond and an Adjunct Assistant Professor of Fine Arts at Randolph-Macon College in Virginia.
David Latane is a biographer, 19th Century scholar, and U.S. editor for Stand magazine, with considerable experience with small presses and magazines. He is a Professor of English at Virginia Commonwealth University.
In addition to the public presentations, the Latanes will work with students and faculty on print-making, small presses, Victorian scholarship, and a brief history of the gutter press.
