Four LCSC students place at national SkillsUSA competition
Four Lewis-Clark State College Professional-Technical Program students placed in the top 20, including a second place by Kellen Christensen, in various competitions at the national SkillsUSA competition, which was held June 25-29 in Kansas City, Mo.
LCSC students had two top five finishers at the national meet, which featured 50 state representatives in each division. All competitors qualified for nationals through by winning state titles or being the next finisher if the top finishers couldn’t make the trip. At the state meet earlier this year, LCSC had 15 students place in the top three, including the four state champions who participated at the national competition.
Christensen, who is from Boise, took a silver medal in Internet working, while Jesse Province, who is from Moscow, was fifth in the Heating, Ventilation, Air-Condition and Cooling (HVAC-R). Christensen, who won the gold at the state level after missing a perfect score by just two points, was the first member of the LCSC Information Systems Analysis Club to take part and place in the national meet.
Also, Bud Whitcomb of Kamiah took 11th place in the collision repair competition, while Abraham Valadez of Nampa finished in the top 20 in Computer Maintenance Technology.
The SkillsUSA Championships is the showcase for the best career and technical students in the nation. This was a multi-million dollar event that occupied a space equivalent to 12 football fields and drew just less than 5,000 competitors. The philosophy of the Championships is to reward students for excellence, to involve industry in directly evaluating student performance and to keep training relevant to employers' needs.
