Simko to present on invasive species in Idaho
Ben Simko, Program Manager and Entomologist with the Idaho State Department of Agriculture, will discuss “Invasive Species Crisis in Idaho – tracking insect invaders of Idaho agriculture, natural, and urban environments” to kick off this year’s Natural Science Division’s Speaker Series at Lewis-Clark State College.
Simko will give his presentation at noon-1 p.m. on Sept. 13 in the Williams Conference Center on campus. The discussion is free and open to the public.
Simko will discuss the background of the invasive species, which is a key environment issue. His talk will explore the context of threats to Idaho’s agriculture natural environments and urban landscapes, and provide insight into invasive species pathways, impacts and early detection, and rapid response efforts.
The discussion will include the defined roles of various agencies and organizations, with emphasis on ISDA’s regulatory authority and the agency’s programs in pest survey, detection, and control. Selected exotic pest case studies will show the diversity of insect species that threaten Idaho environments, their pathways, and how agencies are attempting to address invasive pest threats.
Simko will show the complexity of this agricultural and natural resource crisis will require multi disciplinary skills as well as strong public and private sector cooperation to successful manage.
