LCSC's Mark Sanders receives Mildred Bennett Award
Mark Sanders, a professor in the Lewis-Clark State College Humanities Division, has been named the recipient of the Mildred Bennett Award by the Nebraska Center for the Book.
The Bennett Award is presented annually at the Nebraska Book Festival and will be presented to Sanders at this year’s event, which will be Oct. 26-27 in Lincoln, Neb.
The Bennett Award honors an individual who has made a significant contribution to the fostering of the literary tradition in Nebraska. Its purpose is to highlight the literary and intellectual traditions that enrich lives and mold the world. The recipient is nominated by the local book festival committee and approved by the Nebraska Center for the Book Board.
Last year, Sanders published his second full-length book of poems, entitled “Here in the Big Empty.” His first book of poems, “Before We Lost Our Ways” was published in 1996. He also had a collection of short stories published in 2002 entitled “A Dissimulation of Birds.” In 2004, he had his “Greatest Hits: 1985-2004” book published.
Sanders was born in Creighton, Neb., in 1955 and raised on the eastern rim of the Sandhills in Ord, Neb. He attended school at the University of Nebraska at Kearney where he earned a Bachelor’s of Art and a Masters of Art in English. He also earned a PhD in Modern Poetry from the University of Nebraska in Lincoln.
Sanders previously taught in high schools in Nebraska as well as at Southwest Missouri State University, Tarkio College, the University of Nebraska, Nebraska Wesleyan, Southwestern Oklahoma State University, College of the Mainland, and as a visiting graduate professor at the University of Houston in Clear Lake, Texas.
Sanders’ poems, stories, and essays have been published in journals in the United States, Canada, Great Britain and Australia.
The award is named after Mildred Bennett, who guided the Willa Cather Pioneer Memorial and Educational Foundation, which was formed in 1955. The foundation created a living museum of nearly 50 sites in Red Cloud and the surrounding country that are points of historical interest in Cather’s life and stories.
