The Bennett Award honors an individual who has made a significant contribution to the fostering of the literary tradition in Nebraska. Its purpose is to highlight the literary and intellectual traditions that enrich lives and mold the world. The recipient is nominated by the local book festival committee and approved by the Nebraska Center for the Book Board.

Last year, Sanders published his second full-length book of poems, entitled “Here in the Big Empty.” His first book of poems, “Before We Lost Our Ways” was published in 1996. He also had a collection of short stories published in 2002 entitled “A Dissimulation of Birds.” In 2004, he had his “Greatest Hits: 1985-2004” book published.

Sanders was born in Creighton, Neb., in 1955 and raised on the eastern rim of the Sandhills in Ord, Neb. He attended school at the University of Nebraska at Kearney where he earned a Bachelor’s of Art and a Masters of Art in English.
