AmeriCorps member is making pjs for elementary students

Arlene Hawk, a member of the Lewis-Clark State College Service Corps AmeriCorps program, is making pajamas for elementary school children who are in the Idaho Food Bank Backpack Program in the Clarkston School District to make sure they have warm sleepwear for the winter.

Hawk says she plans to make about 40 pairs of pajamas with long sleeve pull over shirts and pajama pants. Hawk bought the material and is using her sewing machine to make the pajamas.

The Backpack Program, which was administered by the Idaho Food Bank, helps children by supplying weekend food for them. Near the start of the school year, teachers and counselors at schools select needy children to receive a backpack filled with food. On each Friday, if the children return the backpack, it is refilled with food and sent home. The food comes from the Idaho Food Bank.

Hawk says she would welcome help in making the pajamas, and is also accepting donations to help offset the costs. Her goal is to have the pajamas finished no later than mid-December.

Lewis-Clark Service Corps AmeriCorps program provides tutors and mentors to schools, non-profit agencies and prisons throughout Idaho and southeastern Washington.
