First Book is a nonprofit organization with the mission of giving children from low-income families the opportunity to read and own their first new books. First Book’s model is national in scope, but local in impact.

The First Book – LCSC Campus Advisory Board works with local groups such as Boys and Girls Clubs, Head Start, and local schools to reach children in need and provide them with free books and educational materials. To date, First Book-LCSC has distributed over 23,000 new books to 2,300 children from Asotin to Whitebird.

Also, First Book is teaming up with Borders, Borders Express, and Waldenbooks so that customers can make a point-of-sale donation to First Book through Dec. 24. By making a purchase in either store, customers can make a donation to First Book. All funds raised will go to purchase book gift cards to give to community groups that serve children from low-income families so they can get books directly into the hands of the children they serve.
