LCSC helps 527 students earn their GEDs in 2007

The Adult and Family Education Program at Lewis-Clark State College helped 527 students in Region II pass their General Educational Development tests in 2007, according to Donna Callahan, Director of the LCSC’s Adult and Family Education Program.
The 2007 total is an increase of 37 students from the previous year when 490 students earned their GEDs.
GED testing through LCSC is offered by appointment in Lewiston every Friday and once a month in Grangeville and Orofino. LCSC also provides GED testing at the North Idaho Correctional Institution, the Idaho Correctional Institution in Orofino, the Juvenile Detention Center, and the Juvenile Correctional Center, both in Lewiston.
To earn a GED, a candidate must complete a battery of five tests covering math, science, reading, writing, and social studies. The tests measure skills in communication, information processing, problem-solving, and critical thinking. The five tests can last up to 7˝ hours.
“The tests are rigorous,” Callahan says. “A GED candidate’s performance must meet or surpass the performance of 40 percent of traditional graduating high school seniors.”
Preparation for the GED is provided at sites throughout Region II in Lewiston, Craigmont, Grangeville, Kamiah, Kooskia, Moscow, Orofino, and Weippe.
