LCSC men and women are both top seeds at FC tourney

Based on Carroll College defeating Westminster 75-72 in a Frontier Conference men's basketball game on Saturday night, the LCSC men will join the Warrior women as the top seeds in the conference tournaments, which open Wednesday in Butte, Mont.

The LCSC women won the regular season title for the third straight year and will play No. 8 seed Great Falls at 5 p.m., Pacific time on Wednesday in the opening round. Wednesday's first-round pairings have the No. 1 vs. No. 8 and No. 2 vs. No. 7 seeds in both the men's and women's tournaments.

On the men's side, Carroll's win, along with Montana State-Northern defeating Montana Tech 71-66 on Saturday night, left a four-way tie for the conference's top. LCSC, Westminster, Carroll and Montana State-Northern all have 10-4 conference records.

The first tiebreaker in the conference is head-to-head competition. All four teams split their regular season meetings against each other, except LCSC swept Westminster. That left LCSC with a 4-2 record against the other three teams it tied with, and the No. 1 seed in the tournament. Carroll and MSU-Northern went 3-3 against the other teams, while Westminster was 2-4. Carroll and MSU-Northern lost to the same teams in conference play, which means the two will have a coin flip to decide the No. 2 and No. 3 seeds at the tournament. Westminster will be the No. 4 seed.

The LCSC men will open against No. 8 seed Montana Tech on Wednesday at 7 p.m. Montana Tech tied Great Falls for the No. 7 spot, but Great Falls earns the better seed because of the tiebreaker.

The conference tournaments runs through Saturday and the two champions earn automatic berths to the national tournaments in mid-March.
