Rhythms of Cuba to heat up LCSC on March 28
Lewis-Clark State College Continuing Education & Community Events presents The Elspeth Savani Quintet on March 28 as part of the 2007-2008 Silverthorne Performing Arts Series.
The Elspeth Savani Quintet blends the music of Brazil, Cuba, Peru, and Mexico with jazz harmonies resulting in a vocal focused music. The group will perform at 7 p.m. at the LCSC Silverthorne Theatre. Tickets are available for purchase through Ticketswest (online & outlets), at LCSC Continuing Education & Community Events, LCSC Community Programs, and at the door. The cost is $12.50 for adults and $8 for seniors (55 & older) and children (17 & under). Lewis-Clark State College students are admitted free with an LCSC Student ID.
Savani’s musical interest began in her childhood when she had obsession for Scott Joplin’s rags. Primarily a classical singer when she had her first significant encounter with Cuban music, the rhythmic counterpoint and call-and-response between the akpwon (lead singer) and ankori (chorus) were exciting and powerful. The experience led her to set classical voice training aside in order to focus on congas, Cuban dance, folkloric Cuban song, and Spanish language.
“Concentrating most of my early efforts on drumming was a good decision,” Elspeth said. “Nothing could have better informed my singing in this style.
The Silverthorne Series provides the students of LCSC and the Lewiston-Clarkston community with exposure to cultural and educational experiences through presentations of performing artists. The performance is presented by Lewis-Clark State College Continuing Education & Community Events and is funded, in part, by LCSC student fees and the Lewiston Independent Foundation for Education.
