LCSC students will do surveying work around WFT area

Students in Engineering Technology classes at Lewis-Clark State College will be conducting a topographic survey of the Workforce Training area in North Lewiston on Monday to help with the development of the area.
Students will be working at the area around 1920 3rd Ave. from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Monday and will continue their work throughout the week, weather permitting.
During their work, students will be surveying the proposed site for the new truck driving training skid pad. Originally, the skid pad project was to be built on Warner Avenue in the Lewiston Orchards, but the proposed site has been moved to North Lewiston. The students, who have been taking civil engineering and surveying classes at LCSC, also will do various other land surveys.
“This will give the students some real survey experience where they can do the work and be able to see the final result when the project is done,” said LCSC Technical & Industrial assistant professor Steve Staab. “This will benefit the college by saving some money, and at the same time, give the students some extremely valuable experience.”
Staab said the students will collect information on the location and elevation of buildings, streets, curbs, sewer and storm sewer manholes, light poles, and power poles. The students also will conduct ground elevations every 50 feet and do other work on any identifiable features in the survey area.
Staab says the information will be given to a local engineering firm for the project design and any future development plans.
The Motor Safety Center will be part of the survey as well. The skid pad area helps truck drivers learn about skid avoidance, traction control, and what to do if they do start to skid on a slick road/surface.
Last month, Engineering Technology students worked with the design and building of an insulating wall for the Salvation Army Center in Lewiston. The wall was measured and designed by students, who worked with community volunteers to complete the project and install the wall.
The two projects are expected to save the college and community thousands of dollars in services, according to Jack Hutson, a professor in the LCSC Technical & Industrial Division.
