Retiring Lewis-Clark State College professor, poet, and essayist Bill Johnson will be giving a reading of his work at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 26, at the LCSC Center for Arts and History, located at 415 Main Street in Lewiston.

Johnson, is leaving Lewis-Clark State College following a 25-year career as a professor of English and creative writing. He was awarded a National Endowment for the Arts Award in 2007, and was also the recipient of an Idaho Commission on the Arts Fellowship, an Idaho Commission on the Humanities grant, and a former Idaho Writer in Residence. Johnson has been a central figure in the humanities and the literary arts of Idaho, with his work for the Humanities Council, and the Idaho Humanities Council Speaker’s Bureau, as well as his presentations and readings at national and regional forums.

Although Johnson is a noted scholar in medieval literature, he is perhaps best known for his poems and essays. His book of poems “Out of the Ruins,” published by Confluence press, won the Idaho Book of the Year Award in 2000. His essays have been widely published in literary magazines, and included in the literary anthologies “Forged in Fire” and “Written on Water.” He is currently working on a prose memoir, “Bye Bye Love: a 50’s Boyhood.”

The reading Saturday night is a celebration of his artistic work and his years of dedicated teaching.

The event is free and open to the public, and refreshments will be available. Books will be available for sale and signing
