Center has Day of the Dead exhibit

The Lewis-Clark State College Center for Arts & History will open a Day of the Dead exhibition in the upper galleries on Halloween

Day of the Dead (Dia de los Muertos) is a holiday celebrated in mainly in Mexico and by people of Mexican heritage. The holiday usually is held on Nov. 1-2 in connection with the Catholic holy days of All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day and focuses on the remembrance of family and friends who have died. Traditions include offerings as part of an altar in tribute to the deceased. The offerings include food, flowers, beverages, sugar skulls, and personal items.

The Day of the Dead Exhibition is made possible with objects from the permanent collection of Mexican Folk Art from the Center for Arts and History. Among several contemporary altars created by invited artists, writers and service groups is an altar to Mexican painter Frida Kahlo, highlighted with many of the objects in the collection, including beautiful woven skirts, tin candelabra, and calaveras.

The Center for Arts & History gallery is open to the public Tuesday through Saturday at 11-a.m-4 p.m. Admission is free, but donations are graciously accepted.
