LCSC officials look at mascot costume designs for Lewie
Members of Lewis-Clark Clark State College mascot committee are looking at different costume companies and the costs associated with making an outfit for the college’s new mascot, Lewie.
Last month, LCSC students, faculty, staff and alumni voted for a fantasy character that resembles the Colorado Avalanches’ abominable snowman (yeti) mascot Howler. LCSC’s mascot, Lewie, will be somewhat based on Howler, but will have its own unique features and uniform. Because LCSC’s new mascot is based on a fantasy character, it will be officially referred to as Lewie, the name also selected during the vote.
Members of the mascot committee are looking at costume companies and have found the cost for a custom mascot costume runs anywhere from $4,000 to more than $10,000, depending on the quality and materials. A decision on the company and costume is expected to be made this month. A few groups on campus have agreed to help with the cost of the costume.
When unveiled, Lewie will appear at LCSC functions, including home athletic events and Warriorentation. The mascot also will make public appearances, including parades.
Discussion is also being held about a possible scholarship for the persons who wear the mascot. The plan is to have more than one student wear the mascot during a semester.
Last month, anyone with an LCSC e-mail address could vote in the two-day process. There were five costume-mascots to choose from along with four names.
The abominable snowman costume received 221 of the 520 votes cast or 42.5 percent of the vote. A blue-flame like mascot was second with 144 votes or 27.69 percent of the vote. The remaining three costume designs drew between 7.7 and 11.7 percent of the votes.
Voters were also allowed to choose the name of the mascot and four possible names to choose from. Lewie (short for Lewis or Lewiston) won with 189 votes, while Wally the Warrior was second with 160. Elsie (pronounced L-C) was third at 102, and Twin River Charlie was fourth at 37.
A steering committee, chaired by Dean of Student Services Andy Hanson, narrowed the selections to the five mascot models and four names. The committee consisted of leaders in LCSC student government, LCSC athletics, LCSC Native American/Minority Student Services, and LCSC Communications.
“We look forward to continued collaboration with student leadership to complete this project,” Hanson said.
Here is the voting breakdown with the web site addresses of the mascots used to provide the basic model for Lewie.
