More than 400 juniors and seniors from 15 public and private high schools in the north central Idaho and southeastern Washington areas participated in the annual Lewis-Clark State College Professional-Technical Preview Day on March 3 on the LCSC campus.

The annual event, which showcases professional and technical programs offered at the college, gave high school students an opportunity to preview a variety of careers in professional and technical fields.

Students toured the LCSC facilities and programs during the day. The programs that were previewed are Administrative Medical Assistant, Bookkeeping, Business Management, Business Technology, Early Childhood Development, Graphic Arts/Printing Technology, Legal Assistant/Paralegal, Web Development and Computing, Hospitality Management, Auto Mechanics Technology, Automated Manufacturing Technology, Collision Repair, Diesel Technology, Engineering Technology, Industrial Electronics Technology, Informational Systems Analysis, Welding Technology, and Heating, Air Conditioning & Appliance Technology.

This year LCSC and Valley Vision worked collaboratively to provide an even greater experience for area students by including an interactive Soft Skills Panel and four Industry Workshops: Engineering/Manufacturing, Transportation, Hospitality/Business Entrepreneurship, and Administrative Services. There will also be several scholarship opportunities for students in attendance.

Student arrived on the LCSC campus at 9 a.m. and gathered at the Activity Center where they received packets and filled out information cards. At 9:30 a.m., the event kicked off with a welcome session, which included a welcome address from Rob Lohrmeyer, Dean for Professional-Technical Programs and Tony Fernandez, Provost of LCSC.

Students had the option of submitting scholarship applications and three students from the application pool were selected to receive a $500 scholarship, or one of two $100 scholarships during the Welcome Session. Dean Lohrmeyer and Dean Hanson of Student Services presented the scholarships.

After the welcome session, the Soft Skills Panel discussion took place. This panel included two students from the Clarkston DECA program, Susan Lawson of LCSC Career and Advising Services, and Michael Davis of Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories.

Following the panel, students were divided into two groups. The first group left the Activity Center at approximately 10:30 a.m. and took part in the tour of programs. The second group went to the Williams Conference Center and took part in two of four available workshops. The four available workshops included Hospitality & Business, Administrative Services, Transportation and Engineering & Manufacturing.

Representing Hospitality & Business Entrepreneurship were Jim Burton of Happy Day Corp., and Brian Stephens, an entrepreneur. Representing Administrative Services were Andrea Rinard of Regence BlueShield of Idaho and Vicki Swift of LCSC. For Transportation, there was Joe Hall of Joe Hall Ford and Gary Anderson of Western States. Members of the workshop for Engineering & Manufacturing include Michael Davis and Gina Taruscio of Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories, Mike Sweet of Precision Machine, Katie O’Kelly and Chris Hayes of ATK, and Bruce Larson of Renaissance Marine.

At 11:50 a.m., the two groups switched with the first group going to the WCC for two workshops and the second group doing the Program Tour.

At 1:05 p.m., all students, counselors, and teachers were treated to pizza for lunch.

Preview Day attracts students from area public high schools as well as students who are home-schooled or attend charter and private schools. This event has been in existence for more than 10 years and allows students an opportunity to learn more about technical education and career options by touring specific technical education programs.
