LCSC student designs winning lottery ticket

For the second consecutive year, a Lewis-Clark State College graphic design student has won the Idaho Lottery's Annual Collegiate Scratch Ticket Design Contest, officials from the Idaho Lottery announced on Tuesday.

Andy Burden, a senior from Meridian majoring in Graphic Design/Print Technology, received a check for $1,000 after being named the overall winner from 23 designs submitted by college students from around the state. LCSC freshman Amanda Strong of Anaconda, Mont., placed third.

Burdin follows Lewiston’s Trevor Nesbitt, who won last year’s contest.

Burdin’s design, which will appear on a scratch ticket during the next year, is called “Vault Buster.” He says the design is based on some of his favorite movies, including “Ocean’s Eleven”, “Ocean’s Twelve”, and “Ocean’s Thirteen.”

Burdin said he spent 3-4 days on the concept of the design and then a couple of days sampling different designs.

The colorful ticket design features two games played on the open doors of a bank vault, one loaded with gold bars and the other stacked with cast. If a player scratches and reveals the word “Bust” in the “Bonus Bag” of money that sits between the two doors, any prize won in the game is automatically doubled.

Strong’s design is called “Fortune Grove” and she earned $200 for finishing third. He design features a forest full of colorful characters, including a wizard, dwarf, and pixie. She said she wanted to capture something that describes Idaho in the design, but she is not a hunter, fisherman, or skier. She said that forests, like in Montana, are a big part of Idaho and wanted to make the forest feel magical with the characters, following a theme similar to Harry Potter.

Idaho lottery official David Workman was at LCSC on Tuesday and presented both Burdin and Strong with their checks.

“The competition provides our students the opportunity to work with a real client and to create a compelling design with unique game play,” said Brian Kolstad, associate professor of Graphic Design/Printing Technology at LCSC. “Plus, by winning, it gives us the opportunity to showcase our work to the rest of the great state of Idaho.”
