President Thomas has succesful hip surgery

Lewis-Clark State College President Dene K. Thomas is resting comfortably following successful hip resurfacing surgery on her right hip at St. Joseph’s Regional Medical Center on Tuesday morning.

Thomas will continue her recovery and work some at home during the next couple of weeks after the planned surgery.

Hip resurfacing is a common alternative to standard hip replacement surgery for individuals with severe hip arthritis. Hip resurfacing surgery removes less bone than a standard hip replacement, where the entire ball of the ball-and-socket hip joint is removed. In hip resurfacing surgery, instead of removing the ball, a metal cap is placed around where the cartilage has worn off.

The family asks rather than phone calls, well-wishers can send either e-mails or cards to Thomas.
