Keith and Cassidy to premier Burma documentary on Oct. 9
Lewis-Clark State College Humanities professors Patricia Keith and Sean Cassidy will have the local premier of their documentary “Reflections of a Hidden Land”, which details their travels through Burma, on Friday, Oct. 9 at 6:30 p.m. at the LCSC Silverthorne Theatre.
The event begins with entertainment by students from the LCSC International Club, which also will be selling international snacks and drinks. The film showing begins at 7 p.m.
Tickets for the event are $6 for the public and $2 for students. All tickets will be sold at the door.
Keith and Cassidy visited Burma over a four-year period and their film explores the country from a human perspective. Repeated visits to Burma allowed the filmmakers to develop friendships and earn the trust of locals.
“Trust” is a tricky concept in Burma,” Keith says. “One way the military regime retains power is by creating distrust among citizens. I know the regime doesn’t want the people to trust me, a foreigner. The situation makes me uncommonly aware of my camera, especially since I know that it might bring official scrutiny on those I have contact with. It’s a dilemma not only while I’m in the country, but also when I’m back home making decisions about how to tell the story I think needs to be told.”
Cassidy was in Burma a few weeks after it was hit by a cyclone in 2008.
“I had obtained a visa before the storm hit, so I was one of the first foreigners allowed back in the country,” he says. “It was a strange experience. Even the undamaged parts of the country were affected. There were no tourists at some of the most popular destinations.
Despite the difficulties of filming in Burma, both professors say they loved the time they spent there. Cassidy describes the country as, “a beautiful, but troubled place. I think we got to see it in a different way than most travelers, and it shows in our film.” The filmmakers will meet the public and be available for answering questions after the film is shown.
