Yeoman wins TRiO photo-essay contest
Traci Yeoman, a senior at Lewis-Clark State College and a program aide in the college’s TRiO Program, has earned a Gold Medal for her photo-essay entitled “The Women I Hate” in the national TRiO Quest contest sponsored by the University of Washington.
Yeoman, who is from Orofino and majoring in Communications at LCSC, entered three essays in the contest, two of which made it to the semifinal round of judging. There were only six entries that made the semifinal round from more than 400 entries received and Yeoman was the only semifinalist with two entries.
Yeoman’s winning entry featured Microsoft clip art that she manipulated and a poem that she wrote that was inspired by a longtime friend. Her other photo-essay that made it to the semifinals was a collaboration with a friend, Robert Currie. Currie took a picture of his motorcycle and Yeoman manipulated the photo and added another poem inspired by her friend.
Yeoman received a digital camera for her gold medal.

The contest was open to all TRiO students and there were three categories: Media Quest, Photo-Essay, and Think Quest. The Photo Essay competition required students to create written material that is enhanced by images they took and manipulated for the web.
TRiO is a federally funded program to help students who will be the first generation in their family to earn a bachelor’s degree, come from a low income family, and/or have a documented physical or learning disability. TRiO programs are education opportunity outreach programs designed to motivate and support students from disadvantaged backgrounds. TRiO Academic Services at LCSC assists students as they earn their four-year degree by intrusive advising, supplemental instruction, and tutoring.
TRiO has a wide range of services, which include classes in study skills, basic computer science, and math support. There are 11 computers for TRiO students to use and there is peer tutoring and a learning lab staffed by peer tutors. There’s also extra support material that can be checked out from the TRiO offices.
