LCSC Space Days is Thursday and Friday
The annual Space Days event, a cooperative effort of the Teacher Education Program at Lewis-Clark State College and the Lewiston School District’s Challenge Enrichment Program, will take place Thursday and Friday, Nov. 19-20, on the campus of LCSC.
The event draws approximately 650 third-graders from Lewiston and Clarkston area school districts. The students will be bused to the Williams Conference Center on the LCSC campus to explore concepts in the areas of space science, exploration, and technology. Space Day runs 9:15 a.m.-1:45 p.m. on Thursday and then 9:45 a.m.-2:20 p.m. on Friday.
Under the direction of LCSC Education professors Cliff Matousek and Gary Mayton, LCSC teacher education interns have designed, crafted and will facilitate 15 hands-on space science stations for the students. The aim of the event is to enrich the sixth-grade curriculum by increasing awareness and knowledge of space science and space exploration through active and fun participation.
The event also features a guest speaker, who again this year is Woody Sobey, education director for the Discovery Center of Idaho. He will talk about rockets and vacuums, including Newton’s Law of Motion and hovercraft, and will also examine how the lack of air in space can affect sound, airplanes, and simulated people. Sobey will give his presentation on Thursday morning to Clarkston students in the Clarkston High School auditorium and then will give a presentation at 6-7 p.m. Thursday night at the LCSC Silverthorne Theatre. That presentation is free and open to the public.
In conjunction with Space Days, the LCSC interns have led two extension activities for the Lewiston third graders. Those students took part in a one-hour pre-launch science lesson and also a Space Art Day project where two artistic students from each third-grade class met with the interns to design a space science related art creation that will be on display at Space Days.
This year, the 15 stations include topics such as reaction mass, momentum, gause gun launch, Martian ice, and inertia.
The Clarkston School District’s Strive Program also provides support to the event.
