LCSC to open volleyball pool play on Dec. 1
After an unfavorable opening-round pairing in the 30th annual NAIA Volleyball National Tournament, the Lewis-Clark State College women's volleyball team had a favorable draw on Sunday for the pool play portion of the tournament, which begins Dec. 1 in Sioux City, Iowa.
The NAIA announced the pool pairings for the remaining 24 teams in the tournament and the Warriors, ranked No. 21 in the NAIA, were put in the same pool as No. 5 seed Azusa Pacific, No. 8 College of Idaho, and No. 17 Doane of Nebraska. LCSC is the No. 20 seed of the tournament. APU and College of Idaho were No. 5 and No. 8 in the NAIA final poll, respectively, while Doane was No. 18.
Although the Warriors are the bottom seed in their pool, they have met the top two teams and have enjoyed success. LCSC defeat Azusa Pacific 25-17, 20-25, 25-23, 25-17 in an early-season tournament in Irvine, Calif., and also lost a heartbreaking five-set thriller to College of Idaho 25-21, 22-25, 25-20, 20-25, 17-15 in LCSC's season-opening tournament.
Azusa Pacific, which was swept by Doane this season, is 24-8 overall, while College of Idaho is 24-2 overall. Both Azusa Pacific and College of Idaho receive first-round byes from the original 36-team field, while Doane, 29-7, and LCSC, 24-7, won their respective first-round matches. Doane played at home and defeated Black Hill State 25-23, 25-23, 19-25, 25-22.
LCSC was the only one of the 12 visiting teams to win a first-round match on Saturday. The Warriors, who were also the highest-ranked team sent on the road, overcame Southern Oregon 15-25, 25-14, 30-32, 25-13, 16-14 in Medford, Ore., to advance to pool play for the third straight year.
The Warriors open pool play at the Tyson Events Center/Gateway Arena on Dec. 1 against Azusa Pacific at 3:45 p.m., and then meet College of Idaho on Dec. 2, also at 3:45 p.m. LCSC completes pool play against Doane on Dec. 3 at 6 p.m.
The top two finishers from each pool advance to single-elimination bracket play on Dec. 4 and 5.
Defending national champion Fresno Pacific (32-0) has been awarded the top seed in the tournament. The Sunbirds are making their 19th trip to the National Championship and will be looking to claim their fifth national title in program history.
Three other teams in addition to Fresno Pacific have previously earned a national title: second-seeded California Baptist (2), fifth-seeded Azusa Pacific (1) and seventh-seeded Columbia (3).
