ISBDC sets January workshops

The Region II Idaho Small Business Development Center at Lewis-Clark State College will offer five workshops during the month of January on the LCSC.

The workshops include two on Quickbooks, and one each on "How to Start a Business Boot Camp", "Payroll Practices for Your Business", and "Price Points."

The workshop on "Payroll Practices for Your Business" is Jan. 7 at 9-11 a.m. in room 224 of the LCSC Sam Glenn Complex. The workshop covers the basics in payroll, from procedures to terminology. The workshop will include discussion on state withholdings and Federal EIN numbers, paperwork required for new employees, how to determine wage rates, W4s, state notification of new employees, insurance premiums and other such deductions (FICA, garnishments, and more), expenses, and additions such as bonuses, compensation and mileage reimbursement. The cost of the class is $25.

"How to Start a Business Boot Camp" will be held Jan. 8 at 9 a.m.-noon in room 136 of Activity Center West at LCSC. The workshops will teach business feasibility, self-employment assessment, initial market research, start-up expenses, financial feasibility, choosing a business structure, obtaining finances, determining regulations, setting prices, creating marketing materials, and developing a business plan. The fee for the workshop is $25.

Two QuickBooks workshops will be offered on back-to-back days on Jan. 13 and 14. Although they are separate workshops, the second one does build off the first one. The opening workshop is "QuickBooks - Getting Started." Participants will learn how to set up employees for payroll in QuickBooks as well as how to work with lists, bank accounts, credit card transactions, and balance sheet accounts. The second workshop "QuickBooks - Accounts Payable, Receivable, and other Record Keeping" picks up where the first workshop ended and discusses the basic of accounts payables and receivables. Participants will learn how to do taxes, deductions, time tracking, and paying payroll taxes. The classes will discuss Washington and Idaho payroll requirements and how to use payroll expenses and payroll liability accounts. Participants also will learn how to generate payroll reports.

Both workshops are at 9 a.m.-noon in room 122 of the Sam Glenn Complex. The fee for each workshop is $50.

The final workshop, "Price Points," is part of the Beautiful Downtown Lewiston Series and will be on Jan. 28 at 8-10 a.m. at Headmasters. The workshop will discuss standard retail prices used by marketers for several items that vary slightly in wholesale cost but share a similar level of perceived value to the customer. The cost is $15 to the general public or free to Beautiful Downtown Lewiston members.
