Beware of a virus from Statesman web site and state agencies
State agencies are continuing to have problems with a couple web-based infection problems.
1) Today, state employees again experienced computer infections when visiting the Idaho Statesman. They were infected with the JS_REDIR.SMA virus; the source of the virus was a malicious advertisement. The Idaho Statesman is working hard to clear up this problem. It may be a problem that is primarily on the obituary page, but this has NOT been confirmed.
2) In general, Fake Anti-Virus infections are still occurring regularly, despite warnings on how to avoid infections. I don’t have to tell you that cleaning these can use up a lot of an IT Technician’s time that could be better used for more productive activities. Of course the clean-up has to happen if a system becomes infected. Below is a warning we have previously distributed in order to make people more aware of the problem and how to avoid it. Even if you have a very effective web filter and your agency has not had a problem with this, your employees need to know for their computer use at home. Infected home computers could (primarily through sharing of files or thumb drives) lead to infected work computers. Please distribute this as you see fit.
Beware of Fake Anti-Virus
It may look something like A Windows Security Alert. Do NOT click anywhere on the page or on your browser, it could download malware or take you to a site that downloads the malware. If at work, notify your IT personnel immediately!
The easiest way to close your browser is by using Task Manager: Click on CONTROL-ALT-DELETE. On your work computer, choose Task Manager, on your home computer, Task Manager may come up directly. Find your browser and either end the task or end the process.
If you don’t want to try to use Task Manager, you can power down your computer manually by pushing and holding the power button until it turns off.
Run an Anti-Virus and Anti-Spyware scan of your computer immediately.
