MLK/Idaho Human Rights Day events are on Monday
Organizations from Lewis-Clark State College are joining others in the Lewiston-Clarkston Valley in a couple of events in observance of Martin Luther King/Idaho Human Rights Day on Monday, Jan. 18.
The annual candlelight procession will be held on the LCSC campus, starting at 6:15 p.m. at the LCSC Amphitheatre on the east side of the Student Union Building.
Also that day, the LCSC/Martin Luther King Day of Service will be held where volunteers will go out and tackle a community project to provide a day of service.
The candlelight procession “Help Light the Way” begins with musical performances at the LCSC Amphitheater. At 6:45 p.m., a candlelight process will move from the Amphitheater to the LCSC Activity Center. At 7 p.m., the Rev. Happy Watkins from the New Hope Baptist Church in Spokane will present some of Dr. Martin Luther King’s speeches and performances by the Spokane Community Choir. Watkins is well-known throughout the Pacific Northwest as an orator of King’s speeches and he brings to life the power and meaning of those speeches.
The program is scheduled to conclude by 8:30 p.m. to encourage families with school-age children to attend. The event is free and open to the public.
Also on Monday, the LCSC Volunteer Center is holding a Day of Service where community volunteers can spend an hour or the entire day volunteering for service projects in the community. Volunteer will meet at 10 a.m. at the Williams Conference Center on the LCSC campus and then will be assigned to a team and given a project to work on. The projects include painting a mural at the Lewis-Clark Animal Shelter, building bluebird boxes with the Idaho Department of Fish & Game., clean up at Lindsay Creek followed by a mural project at LCSC in the Sam Glenn Complex, a food drive for area food banks, painting office space at Life Choices Clinic, projects at the Lewiston Library, and a community art project at the LCSC Center for Arts & History.
All projects are expected to be completed by 4 p.m.
Anyone interested in volunteering can show up at the WCC at 10 a.m., or can contact Breanne Durham, LCSC Service Learning and Volunteer Coordinator, at either bjdurham@lcsc.edu or (208) 792-2194. They can also RSVP via Facebook at http://tinyurl.com/ybr3lvk
