LCSC honors faculty and staff during Employee Awards Social
Lewis-Clark State College held its Employee Awards Social and faculty members Cliff Matousek, Keegan Schmidt, Michelle Sotka, Gwen Taylor, and Alan Marshall were among those honored during Thursday's event at the Williams Conference Center.
Matousek, Schmidt, and Sotka received the President's Award for Outstanding Teaching. Taylor was named the winner of the LCSC Foundation Award, while Marshall received the H.L. Talkington Faculty Achievement Award.
The President's Award for Outstanding Teaching honors the contributions of faculty for their effectiveness of teaching, quality of scholar or creative production, and level of service to the college of community.
Matousek is an associate professor in the Education Division and has been instrumental in Space Day at the college. Schmidt is an associate professor in the Natural Sciences and Mathematics Division and teaches Geology courses. Sotka is a professor and coordinator of the Business Division at LCSC-Coeur d'Alene. She teaches classes in Financial Management, Money and Banking, and Not For Profit Accounting and Auditing.
Taylor won the Foundation Award, which is determined by teaching excellence, contributions to the profession through scholarly activities, and other contributions to the college and community. Taylor is the coordinator of the Elementary Education program at LCSC and also teaches classes in the subject.
The H.L. Talkington Faculty Achievement Award recognizes exception devotion to achieving a quality learning experience, maintaining high standards of rigor and currency of course content, exhibiting a spirit of academic collegiality, and making a direct impact on students. Marshall, who is retiring after this semester, has worked in the LCSC Social Science Division since 1978, the second longest tenure of any current faculty member. Marshall was instrumental in developing and implementing the Nez Perce Language instruction at LCSC.
Psychology professor Rhett Diessner received The President's Award for Excellence in Diversity and Cross Cultural Understanding for his contributions to multicultural recruitment and retention efforts and to increase multicultural understanding at LCSC. Diessner has presented at Native American Awareness Week and assisted with the annual Martin Luther King Jr. and Idaho Human Rights Day celebration.
The Adjunct Faculty Award for Teaching Excellence went to Gwen Sullivan, who has been teaching College Writing and Introduction to the Literature.
Joan Bowen, an applications specialist in the Registrar's office, and Lori Ruddell, a program assistant and certification specialist in the Education Division, shared the Professional Staff Award for Excellence, while the Classified Employee of the Year was Barb Syska, an administrative assistant for the Lewis-Clark Service Corps.
