Chinese Remembering Conference is June 24-25

Lectures, a visit to the Chinese Massacre Cove, and a Hells Canyon jet boat trip highlight the two-day Chinese Remembering Conference on June 24-25 in Lewiston.

The event is the third and final year of the Chinese Remember project, sponsored in part by Lewis-Clark State College. A "Chinese Remembering Project Exhibition" is currently on display at the LCSC Center for Arts & History through July 16. The exhibit includes the Beuk Aie Temple Collection at LCSC

The conference is split into lectures on the first day and a jet boat trip on the second day. Participants can choose to attend the $20 lecture and reception or the $105 jet boat trip, or both.

The event kicks off at 1 p.m. on June 24 in the Orchid Room at Morgan's Alley, located at 301 Main St. in Lewiston. There will be a welcome and introductions, followed by a lecture from Chuimei Ho and Bennet Bronson, co-directors of the Chinese in North American Research Committee. They will discuss "Tolerance and Intolerance: Early Idaho Chinese in the Context of the Pacific Northwest."

At 2:15 p.m., Idaho archaeologist Ken Reid will present "The Chinese in Idaho Mining Camps," followed by R. Gregory Nokes speaking on "A Most Daring Outrage: Murders at Chinese Massacre Cove." Priscilla Wegars will discuss the Beuk Aie Temple Collection at LCSC at 4:30 p.m., and there will be a general question and wrap-up at 5:15-5:30 p.m.

Participants will then head to the LCSC Center for Arts & History for a catered reception and no-host bar event, which will include live historic music and book signings. This event will wrap up around 7:30 p.m.

On June 25, participants will meet at Hells Gate Marina in Lewiston by 8:45 a.m. for the 9 a.m. departure of the jet boat trip into Hells Canyon with River Quest Excursions. The trip will visit five sites once occupied by the Chinese including Chinese Massacre Cove. A site guide with maps will be available along with a box lunch. The trip is limited to the first 100 people who register and pay. The jet boat will return at 5:30 p.m.

Sponsors for the event include LCSC, the Historical Museum at St. Gertrude, River Quest Excursions, Clarkston Chamber of Commerce, Lewiston Chamber of Commerce, the LCSC Center for Arts & History, Hells Canyon Visitor Bureau, and the Nez Perce County Historical Society.
