LCSC receives Governor's Brightest Star Award
Lewis-Clark State College received the Volunteer of the Year award in the school category in the Idaho Governor's Brightest Star Awards, announced earlier this month.
The college was recognized for its leadership in community service and literacy activities throughout Idaho.
The Governor's Brightest Star Award was founded in 2001 to recognize unsung heroes throughout the state who volunteer on behalf of their fellow Idahoans. The purpose of the awards program is to affirm and encourage active volunteer participation by citizens of all ages throughout the state. The awards honor volunteers in the categories of individuals, organizations, students, schools, small business and corporations.
LCSC was honored because of its AmeriCorps program where the college recruits and trains tutors and mentors to work with academically at-risk students in Idaho and provides new books to low-income children through the First Book Program.
Also, LCSC professors are actively leading projects that engage students to give back to their communities through projects which include designing and building wheelchair ramps at private residences, providing medical care to the working poor and uninsured, and preparing taxes for the elderly and low income residents in the area.
The Awards are presented annually by Serve Idaho, the Governor's Commission on Service and Volunteerism. Since its inception more than 500 individuals and groups have been recognized as the Governor's Brightest Stars. This is the second time LCSC has been recognized. In 2008, the college's First Book program received the top award in the organization category.
