LCSC students to present Talkington exhibit on Dec. 15

Lewis-Clark State College students will unveil an exhibit highlighting the life of historic LCSC professor Henry Talkington on Thursday, Dec. 15, from 3-4:30 p.m. at the Nez Perce County Historical Museum, located at 0306 Third Street in Lewiston.

The event will serve as the official opening of the exhibit, titled "The Life, Literature, and Legacy of Professor Talkington," and is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served, and students will be on hand to answers questions regarding the project.

Under the direction of LCSC professor Amy Canfield, the display was designed by Public History students with support from the staff and board members of the Nez Perce County Historical Society.

The exhibit, built over the course of the fall semester, focuses on Talkington's role as an educator and the immense impact he had on LCSC. The design also highlights some of his personal accomplishments including his work as an author.

Talkington, who is the namesake for LCSC's Talkington Hall, lived from 1862-1949 and his 40 years at LCSC is the longest of any faculty member in school history. Serving from 1899-1939, Talkington was the school's first history professor and first librarian, and served as the head of the history department for a number of years. Talkington was also known for efforts in fostering a strong relationship between the school and the state legislature and community.

The exhibit will remain on display at the Nez Perce County Historical Museum at least through the end of the 2012 spring semester, and portions of it may be adapted for use in a campus exhibit, which is currently in the planning stages. The campus project is being led by the Talkington Planning Committee, a group composed of community members and faculty and staff of LCSC.
