Film "The Horse Boy" coming to LCSC
LEWISTON, Idaho - The Lewis-Clark State College Humanities Division is bringing Rupert Isaacson, author of the book "The Horse Boy," and Michel Orion Scott, the director of the film of the same title, to the LCSC campus March 21 - 23.
Isaacson will do a reading from his book on Wednesday, March 21, at 7 p.m. at the Cafe Sage. Both Isaacson and Scott will appear at a showing of the film on Friday, March 23, at 7 p.m. at the Silverthorne Theater.
In addition to the reading and screening of the film, they will conduct a series of classes and presentations for LCSC students and faculty.
In 2007, Rupert Isaacson and his wife Kristin traveled to Mongolia to try to find help for their autistic son, Rowan. Their remarkable journey was the result of Rowan's affinity for horses and Rupert's interest in Shamanism. The book, "The Horse Boy," tells the story from Rupert Isaacson's perspective. The film documents the extraordinary events that followed. Slowly, but perceptibly, Rowan began responding to the Shaman's prayers and ritualistic ceremonies. The film documents how far loving parents will go to try to help their child.
Rupert Isaacson was born in London to a South African mother and a Zimbabwean father. His first book, "The Healing Land: A Kalahari" (Grove Press), was a 2004 New York Times Notable Book. His journalism and travel writing have appeared in the Daily Telegraph, Esquire, National Geographic, Conde Nast Traveller, Daily Mail and The Field. In addition to being a former professional horse trainer, Rupert is founding director of the Indigenous Land Rights Fund, a non-profit organization that helps threatened and displaced indigenous tribes obtain tenure of their ancestral land.
Michel Orion Scott draws much of his inspiration from the study of native cultures, indigenous crafts and a desire to connect with the root of humanity through wilderness studies. In settings from Bolivia to Namibia, Mexico to Mongolia, his films reveal how affected he is by simple human relationships and family dynamics.
