Chinese Remembering 2012 Exhibition opens Friday
LEWISTON, Idaho - The LCSC Center for Arts & History (CAH) presents the Chinese Remembering 2012 Exhibition, exploring the history of Chinese mining, racism, memory and healing. The exhibition will open to the public on Friday, June 8, with the opening reception being held from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. in the galleries. The exhibition runs June 8 - August 17.
This exhibition is inspired by and in partnership with the Chinese Remembering conference. Now in its fifth year, the conference stresses the influence and contributions of the Chinese to the history of Idaho and the Northwest and will be held in Lewiston, ID on June 21 - 22, 2012. Chinese Remembering 2012 will bring together scholars, teachers and the public to discuss and understand the history of this little known ethnic group in the region.
The highlight of this year's conference will be the dedication on June 22 of a granite memorial at Deep Creek in Hells Canyon. Today the site is officially designated the Chinese Massacre Cove, where up to 34 Chinese miners were murdered for their gold in 1887.
Alongside the historical narrative of the Chinese Remembering Project Exhibition, Seattle artist Shelli Markee will have an exhibition of her metal work. Markee brings to the gallery her exhibition Bird Show. Markee's wire birds are installed in an organic realistic flock formation circling the room. The exhibition is experimentation with the projection of light, creating dramatic shadows.
Markee's work is highly influenced by nature and the beauty she recognizes in organic forms. From her home studio in Seattle, Markee carefully handcrafts each piece in her collection. Her background in fine arts is evident in each one-of-a-kind piece she creates. Form is important in her work, and this shows in her finished pieces which have a feel that is at once rustic and modern.
The Chinese Remembering 2012 Exhibition is brought to the LCSC Center for Arts & History through sponsorships from Associated Students of LCSC, Dick & Kim Mitchell & Mr. Windshield and through grants from US Bancorp, Idaho Commission on the Arts, and National Endowment for the Arts. The gallery is open Tuesday through Saturday from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Admission is free, but donations are graciously accepted.
