Center for Arts & History reception will feature art demonstration, lecture
The LCSC Center for Arts & History (CAH) presents Allegories with Sacred Canon: Juliette Aristides, an exhibition of drawings and paintings. The exhibition will be in galleries I & IV and will open to the public with a reception on Friday, January 18, from 4:00 - 7:00 p.m. Aristides will present an art demonstration and lecture starting at 4:30 p.m. in the Main Gallery. The exhibition runs January 18 - April 6, 2013.
Born in Cape Town, South Africa, Juliette Aristides moved to Reading, Pennsylvania when she was 3. Since 1999, Aristides has been a Seattle-based painter who seeks to understand and convey the human spirit through art. Aristides is the founder and instructor of the Classical Atelier at the Gage Academy of Fine Art in Seattle. She teaches workshops both nationally and internationally.
Author of The Classical Drawing Atelier, The Classical painting Atelier and Lessons in Classical Drawing with publisher Watson-Guptill, New York, Aristides has frequently contributed to artists magazine, with her work being featured in Art Connoisseur, American Art Collector, American Artist and Gulf Connoisseur Magazine. Aristides is a recipient of the Elizabeth Greenshields Grant. She has been listed as a living master by the Art Renewal Center. Aristides exhibits in one person and group shows nationally and is represented by Skotia Gallery in Sante Fe, New Mexico, and the John Pence Gallery in San Francisco, California.
Artist Laura Ahola-Young will have her exhibition Prodromes alongside Aristides' in Galleries II & III. Ahola-Young is a Eugene-based artist who teaches in the Art and Applied Design department at Lane Community College. She is originally from northern Minnesota and received her Master of Fine Arts from San Jose State University, while her B.F.A. in Painting is from the Minneapolis College of Art and Design. Her work has often depicted biomorphic landscape of long winters, ice and resilience. She is currently developing work that incorporates scientific research, the Pacific Northwest, and personal narrative.
An LCSC Staff/Faculty Exhibition will take place in the upstairs CAH galleries. "We have many creative and innovative people working at LCSC, and this is an opportunity to celebrate and showcase many diverse and interesting ways of making art," said Vilas Tonape, CAH Associate Director. "We are expecting to receive entries from diverse modes of expression, from photography to mixed media and perhaps found object art."
Allegories with Sacred Canon: Juliette Aristides, is brought to the LCSC Center for Arts & History through sponsorships from ASLCSC, LCSC Humanities Division, Friends of the Center and through grants from US Bancorp, Idaho Commission on the Arts and National Endowment for the Arts. The gallery is open Tuesday through Saturday from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Admission is free, but donations are graciously accepted.
