Important News Regarding Your Pell Grant

If you are receiving a Pell Grant for the 2012-13 award year it is important to understand that your award may change due to recent federal regulations. Public Law 112-74 amended HEA section 401(c)(5) to reduce the duration of a student’s eligibility to receive a Federal Pell Grant from 18 full-time semesters (or its equivalent) to 12 full-time semesters (or its equivalent).  This provision applies to all Federal Pell Grant eligible students effective with the 2012-13 award year.  The calculation of the duration of a student’s eligibility will include all years of the student’s receipt of Federal Pell Grant funding.  This change in the duration of students’ Federal Pell Grant eligibility is not limited only to students who received their first Federal Pell Grant on or after the 2008-2009 award year, as the HEA previously provided when the duration of eligibility was 18 semesters.

The U.S. Department of Education is working on identifying those students who may be affected by this recent change. However, we currently don’t have a single, reliable source of data that will enable us to precisely determine the total amount of Pell a student has received. The U.S. Department of Education is aware of the challenges we face and is moving as swiftly as possible to provide us with resources we can use to ensure that we are complying with the new limitations.

In the meantime, you must understand that this new regulation will affect some LCSC students. If you feel you are nearing, or have exceeded, the 12 full-time semester (or equivalent) limit you should contact the Financial Aid Office at LCSC in order to discuss your financial aid options.

Enrollment Verification

Beginning with the 2011 Fall semester, due to Federal regulation requirements, verification is required that you have begun attendance in all of your classes to be eligible to receive Federal financial aid.  For Spring 2012, if your aid is posted on January 7 or January 13, you MUST have your enrollment confirmed by each of your instructors by day 5, January 23, 2012.  If enrollment verification is NOT received by day 5, your aid will be removed from your student account and all funds must be repaid immediately.  Verification will be reported via instructors recording attendance; students will not need to submit other documentation unless there is conflicting information.

New Ruling on Federal Aid: Don’t Drop Out

What’s the new rule?

As of July 2000, students who withdraw from college will be required to pay back half of their unused federal-aid funds, such as the Pell Grant. A hypothetical case:

If you use $1000 of a federal grant for tuition and drop out one-fourth of the way through the semester, you have only "earned" 25 percent of your grant. The college is required to return all of your "unearned " aid that went toward tuition, which is 75 percent or $750. You must pay back 50 percent of that "unearned" $750, which amounts to $375 to the federal government.

What’s the bottom line?

If at all possible, stay in school. Not only will you be able to continue your education, you can also avoid having to pay anything back to the government. You may contact the Controller’s Office at (208) 792-2202 or the Financial Aid Office at (208) 792-2224. If you are out of the area, please call 1-800-933-5272, ext. 2202 or ext. 2224 respectively.
