ANTH 311 Culture and Education
3 Credits

The sociocultural dimensions of learning/teaching are examined by contrasting educational experiences in different communities and cultural traditions. Topics include language, enculturation, socialization, schooling, and cultural hegemony. Prerequisite: ANTH 102 or SS 150.

ED 287 Introduction to Teaching
2 Credits

Explores teaching as a potential career. Includes personal discovery, transition toward professionalism, familiarization with the teacher’s perspective, schools as social systems, requisites for entering the profession, and critical issues in education. Includes a 40 hour practicum in area schools.

ED 387 Professional Foundations of Education
2 Credits

Survey of the philosophy and historical contributions of leading theorists and practitioners and of legal and social principles and concepts that help to shape and serve to guide contemporary education.

ED/PSYC 388 Educational Assessment and Inquiry
3 Credits

Essential concepts of assessment and inquiry needed for reflective and systematic classroom teaching. Interpreting, critiquing and acquiring data about student and teacher performance are the central elements. Includes standardized testing, teacher-made tests, performance assessment, grading, formal methods of inquiry and classroom research.

ED 405 Professional Strategies for Teaching 6-12
6 Credits

Acquisition of a repertoire of pedagogical knowledge, strategies, and attitudes necessary to design, develop, deliver, and evaluate units of instruction utilizing a variety of traditional and contemporary teaching aids, materials, and activities to meet the needs of a culturally and intellectually diverse classroom population. Fee required. Prerequisite: admission to the teacher education program.

ED 410 Curriculum and Instruction Practicum
2 Credits

Familiarizes teacher candidates with the secondary curriculum, instructional materials, and teaching methods peculiar to their subject discipline and provides an opportunity for application of this knowledge under the guidance of an exemplary 6-12 teacher. Prerequisite: admission to the teacher education program.

ED 417 Secondary Science Curriculum
3 Credits

Prepares teachers to teach science effectively in the secondary schools. Stress placed on inductive reasoning, laboratory techniques and on the use of investigative procedures in developing science concepts appropriate for the secondary grades.

ED 481 Professional Seminar
2 Credits

Provides practical assistance to student teachers by addressing situations and circumstances that exist in the classrooms in which they are working. Concurrent enrollment in student teaching required. Graded Pass/Fail. Fee required. Prerequisite: admission to the teacher education program.

ED 483 Secondary Student Teaching
7-14 Credits

Supervised student teaching in the secondary schools. GPA of 2.75 and approval of the Field Experiences Committee. Concurrent enrollment in ED 481 required. Graded Pass/Fail. Fee may be required. Prerequisite: admission to the teacher education program.

PSYC 205 Developmental Psychology
3 Credits

Helps students gain an understanding of the physical, intellectual, emotional, social and moral development of children and adolescents from a multicultural perspective. Basic theories of child and adolescent development will be addressed to assist the student to learn to set the conditions for human development.

PSYC/SE 404 Communication for 6-12 School Professionals
2 Credits

Includes four areas of communication: writing, speaking, listening/responding, and observing. It is a performance based model whereby student must demonstrate pre-professional proficiency in all the areas. Prerequisite: admission to the teacher education program.

PSYC 409 Psychology Applied to Teaching 6-12
3 Credits

Applies the knowledge base in developmental psychology and learning theory to the education of 6-12 students. Prerequisite: admission to the teacher education program.

RE 408 Reading in the Content Area 6-12
3 Credits

Emphasizes the application of reading principles to problems encountered in content area classes at the middle and secondary levels. Focuses on practical ways to help students comprehend more when reading content area material. Required for secondary certification only. Prerequisite: admission to the teacher education program.

SE 406 Inclusion Strategies for Teaching 6-12
2 Credits

Designing strategies for teaching and assisting individuals with differences or disabilities in the secondary schools. Emphasizes teaching approaches and team responsibilities of professionals working to assist students with needs. Prerequisite: admission to the teacher education program.

SE 407 Adaptive Teaching 6-12
2 Credits

Approaches to adapting curriculum, instruction and evaluation for students with learning difficulties in the secondary schools. Emphasis will be on motivation and alternative learning environments. Practical experiences are integrated into the course. Prerequisite: admission to the teacher education program.
