Campus Safety means protecting people and property.

A college campus is a great place to learn and grow. But a college campus, like any other community, has its share of accidents, crimes and injuries. Fortunately, the right attitudes and actions can help protect:

• You
• Your belongings
• Fellow students and colleagues
• Your campus

Why should I know about campus safety?

Because campus safety depends on everyone-including you! Do your part to protect against:

Crime:
Assault, murder, rape, burglary, vandalism, auto theft, and other crimes can endanger members of the campus community.

Fire:
On-Campus or off, fire can destroy property and injure or kill people.

Alcohol and drug abuse:
Too often, students don't realize the tragic effects of drug and alcohol abuse until it is too late.

Accidents:
Motor vehicle crashes and other accidents claim more young people's lives than all other causes combined.

Take "steps" to protect yourself.

Using common sense is often your best protection when walking or jogging.

Some tips on avoiding attacks

• Go with someone. There's safety in numbers.
• Stay away from isolated areas.
• Try to stay near streetlights. Avoid shortcuts. Alleys, parks, and parking lots may be dark and isolated.
• Protect your valuables. Hold your purse or briefcase tightly, close to your body. Don't carry your purse or pack hanging from your shoulder.
• Don't carry large amounts of cash. A front pocket is safer for a wallet than a back one
• Dress sensibly. Tight pants, clogs, heels make movement difficult. Don't flaunt expensive jewelry.

If you are being followed:

• Cross the Street.
• Change Direction.
• Keep looking back so the person knows you can't be surprised.
• Go to a well-lighted area, enter a store, house, residence hall, classroom or library-- anywhere there are people.
• Notice and remember as much as possible about the person so can give a good description.

Call Campus Security as soon as you are safe. Or, when you see an officer get his/her attention (yell, scream).

• If you have nobody to walk home with call the Campus Security staff and request an escort. You are not bothering the Security Staff.

If you are held up:

• Do not resist. No amount of money is worth taking chances with your life.
• Don't take risks. You can never tell if a robber is armed.
• Notify Campus Security or the Lewiston Police Department immediately. Try to give a description that includes approximate age, height and weight and details on hair, clothing, jewelry, scars, tattoos--anything that's noticeable.

If you are attacked:

• Be realistic about your ability to protect yourself. Yelling, hitting and biting may give you a chance to escape, but it may also lead to further harm.
• Cooperate with the attacker if your life is in danger
• Never feel guilty about what you did--or did not-- decide to do.

REMEMBER, EVERY EMERGENCY SITUATION IS DIFFERENT. ONLY YOU CAN DECIDE WHICH COURSE OF ACTION IS APPROPRIATE.

Some tips on self-protection for women

It's important for all women to take precautions against sexual assault. Avoid danger:

Where you live

• Keep your doors locked when you're alone--night or day.
• Don't let strangers in.
• Don't leave a door unlocked for someone planning on coming in later.

On the street

• Dress for movement, and don't weigh yourself down a large purse
• Don't give information or directions to strangers.

In a car

• Keep doors locked while driving
• Don't pick up any hitchhikers.
• Park in well-lighted areas if possible.
• Check the back seat before getting into a car.

MORE TIPS:

Don't walk alone.

Use the Escort program. Escorts are provided free of charge anywhere on campus. Walk with a friend or classmate to your car of resident hall or make arrangements to be picked up by a significant other.

Don't hitchhike.

• There's no way to tell what kind of person will offer you a ride. Getting in a car with a stranger goes against common sense.

Report suspicious activity.

Campus Security or Lewiston Police should be notified of any threatening incidents or unusual behavior.
