If you are feeling sick, be sure to ask for help. However, unless you have a
real emergency such as severe bleeding, a broken bone or trouble breathing,
do not go to a hospital emergency room for treatment. Emergency rooms are
very expensive and, if your condition is not life threatening, you may have
to wait a long time for care.
When you need medical care, go first to the
Student Health Services on campus.
The nurse there will either treat you or refer you to a doctor. If the school
nurse refers you to the doctor or nurse practitioner on campus, you will need to
pay a $10 co-pay plus 20% at the time of visit. There may also be fees for labs,
immunizations and other tests.
If the school nurse refers you for medical treatment outside the campus, he or she
will give you a signed claims form to fill out. Fill out the form and send it to the
insurance company within 90 days of treatment. Attach all bills you have received.
This claims form, signed by someone in Health Services, is necessary if you want your
insurance to waive the $150 deductible.
If you need medical care right away but the Student Health Services is closed (weekends,
evenings, holidays) go to one of the following walk-in clinics: Express Care at Valley
Medical Center or Minor Care at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center. Then, as soon as you can,
go to the Student Health Service, tell them what happened and get a signed claims form to fill out.

The state of Idaho has mandated that all students must be covered by health insurance.
This cost will be added to your fees and due at the time of fee payment. International
students must purchase LCSC health insurance. This requirement cannot be waived even if
a student has comparable insurance from another source.
When you receive a bill for medical treatment from a doctor or hospital, do not pay it.
Instead, pick up a signed claims form from the Health Services office, fill it out and
send it with the bill or bills to the address on the claims form.

The LCSC campus is usually a safe place. However, if something happens that makes
you feel unsafe, you should contact the Campus Security Department. The security
department is located in the basement of the Fine Arts Building in room #105B, and
is open from 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. Their telephone number is
208-792-2226.
In an emergency, call the Campus Security emergency number at 208-792-2815 or call 911
(the general emergency number in the U.S.). If you call 911, a dispatcher will ask you
questions such as your name, where you are calling from, your telephone number and what
the problem is. Answer the dispatcher’s questions as calmly and clearly as you can. The
dispatcher will then determine which emergency agency, or agencies, should respond to the
scene. Another dispatcher then will then tell that agency to respond. You should stay on
the telephone until help arrives. Do not call 911 unless there is a real emergency such
as a fire, serious injury or someone is threatening you.
The primary duty of the police is to serve and protect you, and you should not hesitate to
ask for their help at any time. For more information of the services provided by the local
police, see the Lewiston Police Department website.
For answers to many questions about health and safety, see the NAFSA International Student Handbook.

Since it is not a good idea to carry your passport with you unless you are traveling, you will
need some other form of identification. There are several forms of identification which you can
get while you are in Lewiston. These include an LCSC Student Identification Card, an Idaho
Identification Card, a Social Security Card and an
Idaho Driver’s License.
When you first enroll at LCSC, you will be issued an LCSC Student Identification Card. This
card provides students with use of LCSC computer lab facilities at no charge, free admission
to campus and athletic events and a student Internet account. Student ID’s are printed at the
SUB Information desk. You must provide a passport, driver’s license or other photo identification.
You must also be registered for the current semester and have paid your fees or signed a payment
plan contract. This card has your picture on it and shows that you are a student at LCSC. It does
not show your birth date and so cannot be used as proof of age.
You may get an Idaho Identification Card from the Driver’s License Department at the Nez Perce County
Courthouse at 1221 F Street, Lewiston, Idaho. The courthouse is open Monday through Friday from 8:00
a.m. to 5:00 p.m. This identification card will have your picture on it and may be used to prove your
name, address and age. The price is $7.50 for a card good for four years or $15 for a card good for 8
years.
You should take 6 pieces of identification to the Driver’s License Department to get an identification card:
- Passport with valid F1 visa
- I-94
- Valid Form I-20
- Mail addressed to you at your local address
- Social Security card (or a letter from Social Security denying you a Social Security number)
- Birth certificate
To get a Social Security card you must have a job offer. Once you
have a job offer letter, come to the IPO office and request a letter verifying that you are
in F-1 status and are attending LCSC. Then, take the job offer letter, letter of attendance,
your I-20, your passport and your I-94 card to the Social Security Administration at 1617 19th
Avenue in Lewiston.
The Social Security Administration office is open from 9:00 a.m. to
4:00 p.m.
To get a Social Security card, fill out the application and wait to
talk to an office person. You do not need an appointment but be sure to take a number when you
come into the office so that you get a turn. There is no charge to apply for a Social Security
card. You will get your card by mail in two or three weeks.
If you wish to drive a car while you are in the U.S., you will also need
to get an Idaho Driver’s License. If you have a driver’s license from another country you may drive
in Idaho for up to 90 days without an Idaho license. You must also abide by any other restrictions
on your license. For information on how to obtain an Idaho Driver’s License, call 799-3138 or go to
the Nez Perce County Sheriff’s Department at 1211 F Street in Lewiston.
When you apply for an Idaho Driver’s License you will need the following
documents:
- Passport with valid F1 visa
- I-94
- Valid Form I-20
- Mail addressed to you at your local address
- Social Security card (or a letter from Social Security denying you a Social Security
number)
To learn more about getting an Idaho Driver’s License, check the
Idaho
Transportation Department, Division of Motor Vehicles website.
