Advising Checklist

 STAR/ New Student

¨     Release students to register (Adm. Asst. may do this prior to STAR).

¨     Have student complete PIF for their program of study.

¨     Have student Logon to Warrior Web.  User ID is first initial, middle initial and full last name.  Password is birth date.  If unable to log in, contact the Helpdesk (2231).  Current or returning students may reset their password by accessing “What’s my password” on Warrior Web main page.  They will then login to LCMail and get their new password.  LCMail initial login is the same as above: name and birth date.

¨     Complete “Conditions of Registration.”

¨     Have student register for appropriate English and Math course based on placement scores.

¨     Remind students placed in remedial courses (Eng 090, Math 015-025) that the credits do NOT count toward graduation, BUT that the course is necessary for them to build a strong academic foundation.

¨     Remember that Eng 101 is the pre-requisite for NS 150, Literature courses, and some Social Science courses (always check pre-requisites)

¨     Advise freshmen to register for no more than 12-15 credits their first semester unless student is academically strong.

¨     Remind students of section listings: LA, LI, and LS indicate sections reserved for athletes, international, and TRiO students; PT and BTS courses are reserved for professional technical students; 60, 61, 62 indicate online sections.

 Initial Session

¨     Introduce yourself, ask the student about themselves.

¨     Listen; let the student talk.

¨     Answer questions.

¨     Make sure the student is in the correct program.  Refer if/when appropriate.

¨     Fill out a PIF to become official advisor (unless one has already been filled out; check WarriorWeb advisee list).

¨     Review the advising syllabus (roles and responsibilities).

¨     Encourage involvement in program and campus activities.

¨     Answer any remaining questions.

¨     Schedule the next advising session (typically for pre-registration)

¨     Encourage the student to come prepared (some idea of courses they want to take, printed off "degree audit," etc.).

 Pre-Registration

¨     Release advisee to register.  NEVER RELEASE AN ADVISEE WITHOUT MEETING (or corresponding by phone or email) TO DISCUSS THEIR SCHEDULE.

¨     Refer to the student’s Degree Audit (formerly "Program Evaluation."  They should have this printed off Warrior Web prior to session).

¨     If student is “CONDITIONALLY” admitted, review requirements and call CAS (2313) to have “hold” removed, OR refer student to CAS.

¨     Work with student to build class schedule (refer to degree audit) Remember advisors advise, but the student decides.

¨     Remind student of registration dates.

¨     Remind students to keep up-to-date with financial aid requirements.

 Returning Students

¨     Students who have NOT attended LC within the last 3 years must complete an “application for admission” online (Registrar’s website), and pay the application fee.

¨     Students who have attended within the last 3 years must complete an “application for readmission” but a fee is not required.

¨     Students who are returning after suspension must petition and reapply for admission.  All petitioning students must meet with CAS prior to registration.

¨     Continue with regular advising process.

 Transfer Students

¨     Review transfer credits.

¨     Remember that only the Transcript Evaluator (Admissions) can accept Core equivalencies, unless a petition is submitted.

¨     Course equivalencies may be changed by the Adm. Asst. IF the transfer course is coded as “elective.”

¨     Remember that courses “failed” at LC must be repeated at LC.  Transfer grades are not counted toward LC GPA.
